  1. Cheers Wayne, I think this is the vets first time operating on a fish, but in his defence his friend from uni is working with marine fish in australia and has been seeking info from him. The pearls gill covers are curved on the edges so it is going to a slight trim compared to some of the pics of ops you see, he is just really ugly with these gills curved, such a shame for he is a really nice fish.
  2. My pearl arowana has gill curl and i have a vet willing to do the operation but i cannot find the required info to give to him for knocking the fish out so he can trim tne gill covers for me. Does anyone know what to use, any help will truly gratefull.
  3. Thanks for the condolences (think i spelt it right) , it actually had a series of seizures really strange almost like a heart attack. You could see its skeleton through its scales when it was having a seizure. It had a total of 6 attacks over 2 days and was drained of life, i couldnt find any info on this aliment so i am still no wiser. Has anyone else had this happen? Poor fish. None of the other fish where affected thank god so thats why i thought it was possibly a heart attack or something similar.

    Hey

Welcome David, hope you enjoy the forum, I was wondering if you have any photos of your black arowana
  5. Dont forget about the zebra plecos for $189 and the flowerhorns for $59 plus tropheus mooris for roughly $50 upwards (many different colour morphs available). I recently lost my second siam tiger it was about 25cm, so jonathon is a loner again . I am a reluctant to add one so small in with him as it would fit in his mouth , so unless someone has a full grown siam they are willing to sell (which the person would have to mad to ), he will have to hang out the oscars. Have you tried fresh shrimp or prawns from the supermarket most fish cannot refuse these. I almost forgot about the killie fish. There are a few varietys available as well. dont ask me what varietys are avail as i dont know sorry.
  6. Could be hole in the head disease? Is the white stuff pus looking, and are the holes like craters?
  7. What two species of fish are breed to make flowerhorns?, maybe those two fish are allowed into NZ, just a guess.
  8. I actually think there is now more fish available and sortly more will be taken of the prohobited list eg Flowerhorns etc .Asian arowanas where taken of the prohibited list last year and come to think of it a few cichlids as well, you only have to take a look around the LFS to see there is more variety available than ever before, just got to be in the right place at the right time. I actually thought MAF where looking at the fish that could live in temperate conditions like chinese high fins, minnows and some barbs, thats just what i heard
  9. Just out of curiosty where did you get them from and if you dont mind how much as my partner wants to set up her own tank with puffers.
  10. I would shell out 5G for an asian if i had 5G as you can triple your investment every year if it is a perfect specimen and well looked after. I certainly would for an red fuision arowana as some adults are being sold for around 100G mark upwards not bad for a initial investment of $6500.

    CO2 valve

I am after a co2 valve? can someone help me out here? Is any one making them?
  13. Sorry i havent been around for a while guys and gals as the last month has been a hectic one, so anyway the move was a success, all fish have settled in well and are back normal behavior (eat sleep swim poop breed and of course hide) Thanks for the offers of help but we got it done all ok . I only lost 3 neons, 4 lemon tetras and unfortunately my :cry:six barred distichodus which i will be replacing very sortly. Maybe get a couple so i can watch the interaction. I will say sorry now as i have not set back up my pc yet but i will try to get everthing back up and running as soon as possible as i have new photos of the fish and setups and some photos of some other peoples tanks and fish a lot of big, unusual, beautiful fish pics to come So see you all again sortly
  14. I dont think im going to have to wait till i move as the male has chosen a new cavern and there is a female dancing around the outside of it fingers crossed, hopefully they are not teasing me
  15. I think kriber got the last of them today so i hope he brings in some more
  16. otocinclus are for sale at redwoods for only 3-4 dollars only  , i have 2 in my discus tank and they do a bloody good job on the algae. I have an article here on the care and breeding of otocinlus and if kept in to smaller groups they will not fare as well as a bigger group together, apparently they will school together, i have seen my 2 follow each other around all over the tank, so a group must look really impressive. Mind you though in some books it says never to keep these with discus for they will feed on the muscus on the discus :-? , but i have never seen them do this . As for temperature 70 - 79(f) and a ph range of 5.5 - 7.5 makes a pretty adaptable fish, just read my notes and they require high oxygen content in there water, but then my next lot of notes never mentioned it. :-?
  17. I have emailed the owner seeing if he is able to send things to nz and on what the postage price would be, im just waiting for a reply. Im really keen to try the biological fluid bed filters and the seachem filters as i have heard alot of good things about them, also how much are or how many fluid bed filters do you see in nz? The only one i have seen was around the $200 mark. As for warranty yes i could be a problem but most parts are available in nz for some of the range they have.
  18. Check out this australian online shop it is awesome so much for so little www.aquariumproducts.com.au I will be buying stuff from here from now on.
  19. Thats a really good price, are they available right now? or do they have to order them especially? as one can never have enough If they can get them straight away let me know as my friend is after some. Sue and Craigs zebra page is a bit like a bible on zebras, it is very well known around the world, good to see a kiwi up there with this fish
  20. As for the breeding of them have to postpone trial run due to moving, but i think I have 2 males and 4 females. 1 of the new zebras has isolated itself from the group and is getting rather hairy around the cheeks, as for the others they all hang around the male, I think these are females as they are generally ready before the male is

    Arowanas

Cant relly say where i got the jardini from sorry due to not wanting to upset anyone and due to the fact they arnt on the allowable list (who needs this list anyway ) I have been in touch with david at jansens regarding the asians, but i have spent all my play money on the zebras, but hopefully will be able to buy one in a few months time (bloody partner  ) Sorry Aj havent seen the arowana pond, but would sure love to, its a shame they didnt have photos of them, but i know i wouldnt be able to help myself and would have to lean over the surfice for a little look (and with some crickets in my pocket ). The only story i have heard that there is someone in the north island breeding green asian arowanas for food fish overseas  this is a bit far fetched but it has come from a good source that has seen them :-? , any tips where to find him/her as i would love to get one
  22. It was a six-barred distichodus Distichodus sexfasciatus which is a tetra from the congo river system or lake tanganyika. They grow to about 35cm and dont lose there colour when full grown. Will eat anything but plant matter can be prefered. Has a clown like behavior and will school with similar coloured fish, in my experience dosent like tiger barbs. Growth is resonable fast, also needs high O2 water. I have one in my discus tank and there is a pic of it in my photo albums, check it out to see if it is the same as the one you saw
  23. The silvers grow faster then the pearls anyway. Yes the pearls are more staunch looking then the silvers. The silver starts to fill out when they reach about 12-14 inches. When you see the baby silvers they are quite thin, long looking where the pearl growth is balanced (length and girth). I have been told to grow arowanas in tanks that are only just big enough hence the "let them grow into it" eg.24*12, 36*18, 48*24 etc etc and move them as they outgrow each tank, then that way they fill out due to lack of space, I did this with my first silver and it did work to a certain degree, I think that is what to do with the asian arowana to make a more them look more impressive which they do. You dont see many photos of full grown asian arowanas do you now which is a big shame
  24. I am a bit dumbfounded to what i have annoying my fish. There is a wee white worm with a sharp pointed head swimming in my tank and attaching itself to my oscars and siam tiger, there also appears to be a wee white bug crawling on them as well and causing abit of strife with the fish. They dont appear to be planirians forgot how to spell it as i have had them before and didnt cause this problem. The worm things are causing a secondry infection to flair up. Any help would be appreciated.
  25. HA HA HA Thanks andrew yea your a helpful bunch Just making me have nightmares about the move
