Yep same here. No carbon unless needed to rid medications. I use carbon in my marine tank though :lol:

For a 475L main tank, i wouldnt use a sump any smaller than 100L's, just because, if the power goes off, you need to have enough room in your sump to have some water drain into until the level gets low enough for the syphon to break. How to arrange it, well if it was me i would have a wet dry trickle tower, with course sponge in top, then filter wool, then bioballs. Then going into some baffles incase of bubbles (heaters in the baffles) then the return pump section on the other side of the baffles. Very simple yet effective setup in a freshwater tank.

Well i went away over the new years period for 3 days. The corals werent looking good at all before i left (werent looking good for the week before, so did a water change a few days before and didnt change anything) So today i came home to dead corals. All of them :evil: :evil: The water level had dropped a little bit from evap, salinity was on about 1.030. I dont think small tanks are the way to go. Unless you have a constant supply of saltwater to do constant small water changes, or are very skilled, then i dont think its the best way to go. I know it has been said sooo many times, and i know i tried the almost impossible, but owel, was a very good learning curve for me.... I have decided to hault the marine tank for the moment, and will probably start another one (wait, not probably... WILL start another one...) later in life when i have more $$ to play with. So im going to sell all my rock soon, and just stick with my freshwater tanks for now.... :-? Aging water is a way to get rid of the chlorine and/or chloramines in the water. They evaporate out after a few hours. Also, you can pre-heat water when aging it so your fish dont get shocked at all with water changes. Sumps are used in freshwater, mainly to hide equipment, add more volume and give more space for media. Canisters should not be used to pump water from a sump up to a tank as this puts too much head pressure on them. Canisters are designed to be used with no head (intake and out-take at same level) HTH

Sweet. Tank should come together awesomely having a good co2 system and 250W halide. Just keep the bubble rate on the co2 around the 1 bubble per second mark and see what thats like. You will probably have to up that once the plants realy get going with that halide though. Keep us updated, and dont forget the pics!!!

The true SAE's are meant to be the ones that eat it but i havent had much experience with flying foxes so im not sure

Ohk, This is how i would do it if i had $2000 ish to spend on a planted tank. I would use and under gravel heating cable with daltons aquatic mix on top, with a layer of sand on top of that. The plants will love the sand, and having the under ground heating will keep the sand from going anaerobic. I would paint the backround of the tank black. You already have the co2 injection so thats no worry. For lighting over a 300L tank i would use 2 150W metal halides with 8000 ish Kelvin bulbs. Filter i would use a 1200LPH canister. Aqua one CF1200's are pretty good, and at only $130 ish you cant go wrong :lol: Ferts wise, i would buy some PMDD off someone who makes it (i use Lukes (luke*) and it does wonders in my tank) or make your own. HTH

My main tank is a 250L planted and it has 6 average sized fish (angels, keyholes, kribs) and 11 small schooling fish, 8 Corys (3 bronze, but 5 are only pigmy corys so very small) and about 4 Bristlenose. Altogether, 29 fish

If i was you, I would go straight to metal halide. Get rid of the hood all together. It is inevitable, you will do it anyway eventually. This will give you much more possibily for corals etc, And will make your tank look good and you will not regret it. Trust me, you WILL upgrade to halide eventualy, so why not do it now?!?!?! Do it once, and do it right EDIT: Also, that is an awesome price for that skimmer. The new Deltec mce300 skimmers are that price in NZ. Do it!!! Deltec is a well know and reputable brand! Get him to send over a MH while hes at it, Oh and dont forget the bulb :lol:

Yes true, but i thought that cos he put it in the saltwater section he musta meant salt :lol: Um, I had a 30L nano without a skimmer, and it went alright. Skimmers remove ALOT of crap from the water. Without one, you just need to do regular water changes, ie. Weekly to twice weekly depending on sizes.... The more the better realy.... I have a 50 odd litre tank now and i havent got a skimmer running on it ATM and its going good, but i plan to put a skimmer on it soon. It just removes alot of nutrients from the water, making the water 'cleaner' and giving the algae less nutrients to feed on..... HTH
