  1. i have 2 chinese algae eaters and when i put sand in the bottom of the tank, they went nuts. burrowing into the sand and digging holes under the ornaments and the plants. i removed 1 and put him in the other tank. no problems as the other tank has pebbles in the bottom. i have just removed to sand from the tank and put gravel in, and the 2nd cae has stopped burrowing too. if you have another tank available, that doesn't have a fine substance on the bottom, i would suggest moving the golden algae eater to there. otherwise you may find most of your plants floating.
  2. the good thing is, it isn't getting any worse. no infections that i can see and it's not as red as it was before. i dosed the tank with melafix and hopefully that will help with the healing process.
  3. hello and welcome lots of us here from wainui
  4. marks thoughts, as he has had a problem with leaks on his small pond, Due to the rough surface of the bottom of your pond, small holes could possibly have been created, allowing for leakage, with the amount of pressure the water places on the concrete, it would be enough to drain the pond in a short space of time, our 2m x 800mm drained within 72 hours. 8)
  5. that was my thought. maybe he's getting too big to fit inside the shipwreck ornament and scraped his head.
  6. i notice a couple of days ago that my pleco has, what looks like, a graze on his head. any suggestions for treatment would be great. any ideas as to what may have caused this would also be appreciated, that way i can prevent it from happening again. he is 13cm long. the only changes to the tank recently are: 1, i put an airstone in the tank, but this is under the gravel. 2, i put 1 of my CAE back into the tank as there was a bit too much algae in there for my liking and the pleco wasn't controlling it by himself. the cae always moves away if rex is around.
  7. i'm not sure about goldfish in warm water, but i have seen a pleco in cold water (about 17*C).
  8. Mark doesn't recommend the brushwood as a major fence. its ok as a surround fence, ie; around a patio or small area, but you would need to be replacing it, as a main fence, within 5yrs.
  9. spend a few hours at wanui beach, you should be able to come up with the ones you want, nice colours too, reds greens, white, usually with jade and quartz in them
  10. thanks paul, may take you upon that offer this week as were quiet work wise.
  11. Hehe... Welcome, to yet another, Wainuiomartian you wouldn't believe the number of us here. sorry can't help with the fish, but WELCOME
  12. okay finally got some (6), twas Esdots birthday, so we'll call them a gift. now have two questions and welcome any further info. 1. can we aclimatise these guys to our guppy tank, would be ice to have some in there for fun, and maybe breed the there as well. 2. the toughy, how do you tell boys from girls, so far all we have is the boys colours are brighter and the girls are a little rounder, whilst this maybe usefull info, it does make the task slightly more of a challenge. any comments welcome, any hints or tips valued. Ta Esdot

    Hi everyone

hi there i have about 120 guppies at the moment, though only 2 of them are adult. the rest are 2wks, 6wks and "teenager" aged. kookie, let me know your colouring, cause when they get older, i may have to borrow a boy off of you to get the red colour in my lot.
  15. its a wainui conspiracy i tell you we're not trying to take over..... HONEST!!! welcome to the forums. hope you find all the information and friendly advise you need
  16. now wouldn't that be an achievement
  17. thanks for that faran, but i have read that one. it seems to be the only captive spawning on record. there also seems to be no definate way of sexing them either. Evil, thanks for the input. yes i have 2. one is 10cm (dale), the other 8cm (chip). since i have put the sand in the tank i have noticed that chip has become a little more rounded that before. i'm woundering if the murky water (result of dumping the sand in and them burrowing in it) may have triggered something :-? . i have heard about cae attacking other fish and i am keeping a very close eye on them to make sure it doesn't happen. dale will chase chip around, but i have never seen him attacking. quite often you will see both of them swimming around together or stuck to the side of the tank next to each other.
  18. sounds like they're being eaten. my adult female guppies were seen eating the 3 of the fry they had from the first lot. (i quickly moved the females after that) i'm wondering, would a swordtail do the same?? i mean, if they are small enough to fit in ones mouth...???
  19. what type of filter is it??
  20. the problem would be that i have sand in the bottom of the tank.
  21. nb: it will be going into my guppy tank. that means it has to be ok to use with fry swimming around. could you please supply model numbers, if you know them
