    Disaster

oh man, sorry to hear about your loss. I was thiking about it the other day as the days seems to get hotter and wondering if the tanks will be too hot for them.. I guess we can never be too careful, especially when depending on technology. Sorry for your loss again, hope you cheer up
  8. Yay, thanks to Tim from Inside Oceans, my lid is done. Wasnt too hard and he did a good job out of it too. I recommend him to anyone wanting to do tanks or glass work Will post pictures when I can
  9. Agreed! Cuz Im also one of the poor students Marine is great but tad expensive. Nice size tank Jasmine, Im sure you would love it. A nice size IMO. Sumps are a good way to go about filtration, especially when you want to keep the tank tidy, less hoses/pipes, cables and heaters in the maintank they all can be kept tidy in the sump. But this means you would need to have an overflow made to your tank. Shouldnt cost much. Have a look around the net, plenty of sump ideas. I initially wanted to go for a sump (maybe when I can afford a marine), but settled on a canister type filter. It works marvels for me. Simple and easy to keep. You can keep the hoses need and tidy if you really wanted 8) Canisters are good as well IMO if you did not want a sump. Just have a look around, plenty of canisters. Best way is to work a budget, then you know what is best to get with what you are willing to spend.. **caugh**fx5**caugh**..

    UV Questions

Thanks everyone, will give it a water test to see whet the nutrient levels are at
  12. Thanks guys! Lights still works.. altho when i was on it was "buzzing" occasionally, only recently since the setup. Am getting Tim to help me out with the glass lids.. Hopefully I can get the lid done soon, in time for xmas..
  13. Hello people, need some help with UV here. Been looking thru the forum but too much posts and the search funtion isnt working so I thought I would post a new topic as it seem faster that way.. apologies if this has been covered before. My main goal is to get rid of all the algae in the tank. As it sits in the reception by the window, its rather inevitable that algae grows. I didnt have this problem when it was there at first, and did scrub them away and do water changes all the time. But it got out of hand and i cant scrub fast enough for it to be clean. It grows back so quick. So im into getting a UV sterlizer or clarifier. I have seen some around but there are afew types and what I wanted to know is which one acctually works and not harm the fishes from its radiation. Ive seen those pond UV ones on trademe that connects in between the hoses of your external filter. Then i saw some that is inbuilt into an internal filter. and there is also one that sits on top of the tank and works like your tank lights but by emmiting UV to clear the water etc. Which type is the best one to use? Its only going into a 180L tank. So im guessing I do not need aything of a big power? Im unsure so if anyone has opinions, or have used the different types of UV methods, please let me know.. Dont want to spend a fortune on these
  14. Having probelms with my lights now Altho the light fixtures in the lid is designed to be used without glass in between the water surface and the lights but it seems tho it has failed.. Im not sure if i should get glass cut to cover the lights from water condensation.. tank has been dark for a while, just getting some lights from the nearest door and the room light.

    Julies?

we can get them here, Organism down here has them, might get some for myself acctually. They are quite adorable and different
  16. I think the 2 unsure ones are indeed Moliro's, like what Tidan has told me http://cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=1910 They look almost the same, except on of them has vertical white stripes on them. Didnt had them when i first got them..
  17. Thanks Just what i wanted, simple no complications and easy to maintain. The filter is great keeps the water very clear and provides very strong current too. Easy to maintain and do water change cuz of the drain outlet or the second connector to hook up anotehr hose on the out. But i do have one minor problem tho, i should have had the "IN" on one end and the "Out" on the other, but currently its set up with both on the same side. The reason i did this was that the hose they privided was too short to run to the other end, unless i have the filter siting in the middle section of the cabinet, but i will have problems with view form the other side of the tank. This caused the surface of the water on the end without the in or out appears to move only slightly.. hmm.. might just get a small power head for the other end or try playing with the nozzles oh yeah.. the nozzls are great but i found that after time, the sand at the bottom gets rearranged due to the current flow. but overall it has been great Hope its lasts long cuz i love the fx5
  18. Organisms has a royal pleco and some other exquisite ones too, but i dun think its a gold line royal but the other plecs are preety too
  19. Thanks for the support and positive comments Duboisi's are getting along and i think they are the yellow bands, as when i got them from the LFS they we still juveniles. Will give them a call tomorrow as they were also 100% unsure when they were still at the shop yeah so 2 of them, and as for the other two, i was told they were "fire crackers", ie protomelas taeniolatus and they were juvi as well. But I dont think they are, so unsure ?? but would love a red empress As for the brand, it just says "Hopar" on the lid. So im guessing its a chinese made brand. And cant find any online. I saw one on trademe: http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=75589550 it looks the same when i got it off trademe, but the one in the link above seems to be "Boyu", so im not sure if they are the same as they look very similar, the cabinet, lid, even the lid colour. But I painted mine black. Hope that helps. I got mine 2nd hand but in a worser condition so i had to fix it up a bit
