  1. Wow, I thought most puffers were fairly aggressive. What other fish do you have in the tank?
  2. I live on my own in a one bedroom place, and not the party type. So no worries there! My three tanks are in the lounge at the moment, none in my room. I might have a look up Albany this weekend!
  3. Awesome, I don't know how big they are, but don't think they're quite at the 7-8cm mark, maybe more about 5cm.
  4. Ah, so could that be why my bigger males don't seem to be colouring? I think I do see a blue dullness to them...But they're certainly not the dominant fish in the tank.
  5. That's not a bad price. Might keep an eye out. How hard is it keeping a brackish tank? There's no big rush for me. I've got my Malawi tank, my Brichardi tank and my fighters in the meantime. Would just like something in my room! Was thinking of putting the Brichardis in there and having a puffer where the Brichardis are at the moment.
  6. Cute! Anyone know retail prices they usually go for or how often they come in?
  7. Yeah definitely will! That's why I was interested in sexing, I got two bigger ones who I think are males (the largest has bright egg spots) but was just wondering if he'd colour up. The other three I think are too small to tell.
  8. Yeah I've seen a couple of brackish puffers. Know nothing about brackish tanks though! Might look into it..
  9. Really? I brought five Chilumbas from the same person. A mixture of sizes, as they were unsexable due to their size. I do believe I have a couple of males and females. I also brought some Maleris from him first. We got on quite well, he seemed nice enough! He let me reserve the Chilumbas till I got paid, as he said he didn't mind as long as they got a good home. I guess he can't really block me as I live just down the road from him! Hehe.
  10. That is cute! How much do they retail for? Is that the only fresh water puffer available in NZ?
  11. I've decided that I really would like a puffer. I guess I'll line up with everyone else who wants one Who here has a puffer and could I please see pics as well as what type they are? What fish stores have stocked puffers? How easy is it to keep a brackish tank (the only puffers I've seen for sale have been brackish, would prefer fresh water puffers though!)? Who can resist such a face? Hehe. They are way cute!
  12. So is it the same with Chilumbas? I've got two quite large ones (and a number of smaller ones) but they haven't coloured up yet. I think there's faint colouring under the right light though.
  13. Nice, can't wait till my Brichardis are of a decent size. They look so pretty already even at their small size. I really like what I read about how everyone looks after the young in a Brichardi community too. I find them really pretty.
  14. Yeah, I was afraid of that. Don't know what to do with them really. If they are hybrids I don't want them breeding, but the male is such a big pretty boy, I shouldn't sell them but can't bring myself to cull them. I'd like one of my pure fish to become dominant male if possible though. They were my first ever fish I brought when I got the tank, back when I was just excited to have fish and didn't do too much research, just wanted something cheap to start cycling the tank
  15. My camera's usually pretty good, but was unable to catch the fish well. The colour of the female is a grey kinda colour with a bluish tinge. http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/s ... php?id=759 - This is definitely what my rainbow Melanochromis is. The males kinda look like this one I guess but with thicker strips: http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/s ... php?id=753
  16. Here's some pictures. Forgive the quality, any help in identifying appreciated! http://taintedkitten.com/photo/thumbnails.php?album=1
  17. Well, the thing is I've got one big fish sold to me as rainbow Melanochromis, or three blue males with vertical stripes which, when I was starting out the tank and didn't know better, was sold as Melanochromis or Electric Blues, no other part to the name. She was in the tank with the three males, one of which is the dominant male in my tank so I assume it was him. I'll just take pictures now if possible. The thing is, I don't know when she was bred either, and yes, it's a mixed tank, but it would only be one of those four which bred her. Three would be the same type, or the rainbow.
  18. Okay, my female was being majorly harrassed and I caught her cause she was at the top of the tank gasping for air. I looked and there were eggs in her mouth. I put her in the tank with some baby brichardis (about three cms long, so not baby babies). Problem is I was told they're Melanochromis but I'm not sure they are, so have no idea what she is really. I had no idea where else to put her where she wouldn't be harrassed. She spat out one of her eggs, but the others seem to still be there. If she isn't too stressed and the fry survive, will the Brichardis eat them? I have no idea how big they'll be having never bred cichlids before. Is this an ok place to put them? I know it's not ideal than her own tank, but don't know what else to do, she was being majorly bullied, especially by the bumble bee cichlids.
  19. Hehe. Sames with me here. I picked up some the other day. Five females and a gorgeous deep brown (almost black) male. But if they start causing trouble they will be the first to go.
  20. I just got six Brichardi babies which were in a tank with larger fish so most were eaten, or squished under the rocks. They were 4 for $12 but I caught them myself and he said to take six. I'm going to be setting up a species only tank too, I think they're really pretty.
  21. Phewf, I didn't come due to gas shortage and don't get paid till tomorrow. Will it be resceduled this month or just next month?
  22. He's awesome, and truely is white I had a couple of white females ages ago -grumbles- Good luck with him!
  23. Hrmm...I was told my two blues were Melanochromis (though didn't specify type), but they have pretty vertical stripes too, not like the first poster's picture...I'll try and get a picture.
  24. Do as David said, or get one big tank with heater and filter and use plastic bottles to seperate with holes in them, I have seen another breeder with this kind of setup. May I ask why you're getting so many males?
