I have got the 87l african cichlid tank set up now, no fishes in it as yet. The pH of the water is around 8.5 at a guess but i tested the water and it read 8.2-8.6, to keep the pH like that i have aragonite and coral sand as a gravel. there is the u/g filter plus a AquaClear 50 external power filter that is turned on high that pumps around 700lph. in it, it hjas a 150w heater thats keeping the water at around 27C/81F. the lighting is 40w but that lighting is shared over another tank next to it. some questions i would like to ask are. What fish could i have that can cycle the tank for me for about a month? Is there anything i need to look out for in the tank with the pH above 8 and the temp around 27C/81F? What algae eater could i have in the tank? Could i get some common names of african (malawi) cichlids that i could have in this tank? Also if anyone has some 'fish safe flat rocks in the auckland region for free or cheap pleras PM me. Cheers

I just brought today a 87l tank that im going to set up as an african ciclids species tank. what i have at the moment is an undergravel filter system but im going to add another internal filter. it will have a 100w heater. a lot of stones(if anyone in auckland has some flat rocks that are very cheap or free please PM me). the pH will be around 8 hopefully.i will be posting pics of it when its set up ready for fish. is there anything else that african ciclids like or what i have to watch out for.

This is photos taken of my 120l Hexagonal Tank(This is my first time posting pics, hopefully it works). Currently there are: 6 Silvertip Tetras (from Hollywoods Albany) 6 Serpae Tetras (from Hollywoods Albany) 3 Angelfish (from Pupuke Aquariums) 5 Albino Corys (from Hollyowds Mt Roskill and Pupuke Aquariums) 2 Bristle Nose Catfish (from Hollywoods Albany) 2 Cockatoo Cilcids (from Pupuke Aquariums) There are 10 or so bunches of val and one borneo sword and that floating plant is a cardamine which is supplied by "tanksman". I will Be adding another 6 of the tetras and possibly remove the cockatoos and replace them with another angel or a pair of blue rams(would these be okay with the rest of the fish?), also ill add 3 bunches of java fern to the driftwood and then il get an amozon sword aswell, then il try root the cardamine in the gravel as best i can. Once i do this, i will post some more pics.

Im still in negoiations with my father about getting yet another tank but with this one im planning on getting wont be any odd tank, it will be roughly a 4 footer and around 275l-ish. with this tank id like it to be african ciclids complete with rocks so they have lots of hiding spaces to hide in. what types of fish are there and please post a pic of them and any local breeders of them how many would i be able to have in a tank this size, i dint wana have ciclids that are over 20cm fully grown. can you direct me to other ciclid tanks that are set-up. iv got too many peaceful community tanks, its time now for an active african ciclid tank.

Iv got a bit of a dilema. If fish food (flakes, tablets) pass their use by dates are they no good for me to feed my fish or is it still ok.iv found some old fish food that i have that has use by dates or APR04. Also what are the live bugs that get attracted to fish food and are these alright to feed to the fish, they are tiny brown insects.

i originally set up the tank for angels in the first place so i dont really wana remove them? if i did move them would discus go with the cockatoos. yes the amount of height for water sapce from the top of the gravel to the waterline is 55cm high.

In my 120l Hex community tank i have 2 male cockatoo ciclids and 3 med/lrg angels, a dozen tetrasand 7 catfish. what is happening at the moment in the tank is that either one or both of the cocktoo ciclids is attcking at the angels and they have smoe of their fins nipped as a result but is leaving the tetras and catfish alone. are these two species(angels & cocktoos) compatable with each other. as the the cockatoos were the first tankmates are they showing the angels whos boss and it be setled eventually or do i need to seperate. Any help will be good cause i love all 5 of them.

My Male Died during the night, very sad , the water seemed to be fine but it could of been because the tank had been recently set up but i did cycle it and kept a look out, the other male from the tank is looking great still, fins spread and swimming freely.

Im sur theres more than two people out there that live on the shore, any breeders and experienced fishkeepers that live on the shore or even beginners

the pump shouldn't of been too strong but do try lifting the wand to just above the gravel and you should get more but smaller bubbles, iv got one of these bubble wall thingees in my HEX and it looks great and the bubbler is just above the gravel, as soon as i cover it up in gravel the bubbles become bigger and there is less of them. Hope that helps
