  1. Get a surface skimmer and/or treat for BGA. Edit -- -- Alan MOD
  2. Hi Darren, Welcome to the forums, glad you (finally) made it! Nice work on the first journal entry, will be excellent to follow progress on them. Don't get discouraged if nothing happens or the female suddenly goes skinny with no sign of spawning, they seem keen and I'm sure it's going to happen eventually! I try and spawn my Ancistrus in portable caves so they can be moved once spawning has taken place. I find that the worst survival rates happen in community tanks with spawnings in permanent decoration, but that's usually due to predatory tankmates and filters that kill the fry. I'd definitely empty everything else out of the tank if a spawning takes place. Got a spare tank handy? I really need to come for a visit! Blue
  3. Sure thing, bro! Big momma and poppa are doing well! I even have the females that I got from you originally (spawning with a separate blood line male) and all of the juveniles you sent. They're getting big and almost breedable, so will be passing on some males. Great GBAs, a pleasure to breed with them He's definitely the largest and most impressive GBA I've ever seen! I leave him with the fry for a little while to get a vacation from breeding
  4. Was taking pics for another thread earlier and noticed poppa GBA out of his cave for the first time since the latest spawn. Hope you can make it out, but he's surrounded on all sides by newly free swimming fry. Nice size comparison with the one on the glass right under his eye....
  5. So it's been over a month since the last update. Well, the fry are doing well and growing. Mom and dad have been joined by another pair of Starlights in the tank they spawned in, no action as of yet. Ah well, these guys are keeping me entertained for now
  6. Yup, just browsed your thread and it's very similar. I'd prefer full pieces that spanned and joined to three sides from inside the tank rather than the sides sitting on top and the partial front and back siliconed to them... of course, it's a good bracing design and definitely better than the commercial tank builders product, as they're designed for common needs. Yours and probably mine were designed as Marine tanks with MH lighting in mind. I just remembered that a cigar shark jumped from a tank while I was in Hastings last week and it had a good sized lip to get over.... lid was off like an open tank.
  7. All good, better somewhere else than hijacking the thread. At least I can respond here rather than PMs Never kept any progress info on the room as I was taking a break from the forums during most of the development.... yup, we're 6 months in and barely filling tanks! The only pic I can be bothered sharing is above, this is a pretty expensive project and progress is VERY slow. Will be another payday before I even do the filtration and heating  then it'll be a matter of scavenging useful bits from the old tanks and moving everything over slowly...
  8. Thanks to the mods who graciously gave me a space to talk tanks! hi quack The bracing on my current tank is done by cutting pieces of glass at least 10cm wide and 10mm thick the exact length of the inside diameters on all 4 sides, then siliconing all three sides of the long braces along the front and back, folowed by siliconing in the side bracing and making sure that all three sides of each brace are properly siliconed, as well as a healthy bond of silicone securing the side braces to the front and back braces. I would place the front and back braces in position with the tank laying down and use clamps to hold in place (doing one at a time), and once the front and back are done stand the tank up and use clamps to put the side braces in position and clamp them to the front and back to hold in place while the silicone sets. Use LOTS of silicone!!! You're gonna trip when you see my next tank. I'm altering the same style of bracing to do something a little different... And following this PM quack asked for a pic of the bracing... To answer your previous question, I've never had any problems with jumpers and I fill my tank to max capacity (lowered the water level to take this pic so you can see the bracing properly). Most fish "jump" by following a glass wall upwards and exiting the tank, which usually means landing on the other side of the glass.... this bracing prevents fish from doing anything aside from getting a headache by acting as a glass fence. Ah, the fishroom. Barely finished plumbing the drainage and installing tanks. Excuse the mess! This is half of the room, each tank holds about 360L of water for a grand total of about 2900L.... I'll do a write up on this someday if I can be bothered
  9. Sup quack, really don't want to muck up this thread any further by hijacking it as well Will PM you with a description. Evil- if you think the new tank is showing off, it's really necessary as the tank frankly scares me. Showing off would be putting up pics of the new fish room
  10. I put a load of medium to large BNs in a half full 60L plastic container (the ones you can buy from the Warehouse) on the fish room floor and walked in the next morning to find half of them on the floor. Turns out the heater was off and they didn't like the temps going up and down. Anyways, I picked them up and plucked off the hair and put them back in the water to find that all but one were still alive. Not my first time finding BNs on the floor hours or even a day later and they still survive.
  11. sup brian, Lemme start off by saying I've seen some of your work (mods) and you rock! back to the subject, I've been working with a stainless fab company on almost a daily basis for the last few weeks and if you work with the right people (namely Chinese that source materials overseas) you can't beat the value for money in stainless. Give me more info on what exactly you want for a quote, but it's pointless as you and your tank are way up there...
  12. Congrats shelly, As antwan said, but I should mention that feeding microworms in a community tank often triggers the feeding that ends up making the fry become the food. In other words, remove the fry to their own little tank before feeding them to prevent them become snacks.

Easier to smash the entire pane and replace the whole bottom. There will be bracing that will have to be replaced, just put it in exactly the same as the original. The bottom pane of glass floats under the sides so is a relatively easy fix. Know any tank makers in your area? I'm learning heaps from Peter at Port Nicholson Glass. He just cancelled an auckland trip but will no doubt head that way again soon.
  14. Hi there, I'm currently raising a batch of axiepoles as well. I've put the eggs into a daphnia culture in a good sized poly box and they're growing fast and eating heaps. My advice is to not worry too much about water changes as they can be sensitive, give them heaps of live food in the form of daphnia and BBS and mozzie larvae and enjoy watching them grow! Mom and dad were black and white and have lots of interesting colour babies which are white, black and a really cool wild colouration of green with spots.

  16. I have some clown plecs that look like smaller versions of the L204 - dead ringers both colour and pattern. Others are murky or splotchy patterns. Still nice fish and always out and about in my tank.
  17. Ah yes, listed as "pretty peckoltias". Clown plecs. Love em to bits.
  18. If your tank is made properly there should be virtually no gap between the glass and bracing to get a razor into. If so, use a glass cutter to create a score and then use pliers to gently twist the glass at the score and make a crack in the bracing, then simply push the unwanted glass up and down to loosen it and then have at the silicone with a razor blade - craft knife, etc - until it comes off. note - remove a bit from an end of the bracing rather than a chunk from the middle. All advice given is for your info only. I think I agree with everyone here when I say anything you do to your tank is your own responsibility
  19. Wonder how large it was when caught Not much different than the many people selling GBAs at 1cm. I was doing it for a little while to keep up with the competition but refuse to sell anything that young or small any more. No offense to you or anyone else that may be doing this, just a personal opinion.
  20. 5 of the Matto Grossos left, nice group of starlights just hit 2 months old.
  21. I second that. Liked it for a while, but even the fish got tired of only looking at stalks
  22. Gorgeous fish dude and rcon. I miss my synos... lost one to medication and parted with the rest as the nocturnal activity freak out the discus. Nice Geo!
  23. Hi beth, just wanted to mention that this thread is almost 2 years old and whitecrust never returned to the site, as far as I know. You may want to attempt to PM them?

    NANO Tanks

The distributor needs to carry parts and spares for any item that they sell for a certain period of time according to certain acts. Whether or not said parts will be reasonably priced is a whole different story though! I saw one of these when it just arrived at Hutt Pet Centre and needless to say the staff were looking forward to playing with it. Now all they need is a Marine section!

I know a guy in WGTN with 2 pieces of 3.7m x 1m 12mm glass. You're too far away and I'm not even going to get into calculating safety ratios... Warren would be the person to talk to, as I'm pretty sure he's built something similar in the past... it's in the National Aquarium now, if memory serves.
