Billaney
I'm feeling both unlucky but also very lucky tonight . ! I was just doing my rounds tonight and when i got to the 700L Community tank something was not right, i looked at fish and they were not there normal active self, it took a few mintues but i notice there canister filter had stopped!! , the water was a bit cloudy ( there is a 2nd smaller canister filter on this tank which thank god WAS still going. I took the filter apart and got it going again eventually but something was still not right , checking the temp on the digital thermomiter it was 30.5C one of the heaters had also jammed on at the same time !! NO WONDER THEY LOOKED OFF !! only about 35% normal filteration and 30+ degrees water , poor things. :-? :-? I've unpluged the faulty heater and the temps dropping , its normaly around the 27 degree mark in there. Hope i don't lose fish or at least not to many ( 1's too many for me ) fingers crossed , glad i noticed , no telling what i'd have come down to by the morning !

jude
Not a lucky escape - it was because of good checking and good routines. Congratulations on saving the fish Cheers Jude
Kookie
Oh wow, that's great news Paul (that your fishes and tank are coming right). So glad you caught it in time. I agree losing one is one too many lol. Came home to one fatality last night, a neon, but I guess neons are prone to belly upness. The plants looked a little sad for not having the light on for over 24 hours, but all is still well in fishy land. Good luck with your fishes. Caryl
This is why you should feed your fish daily and use the time to check everything else. Glad you picked it up Paul before fish lives were lost.
peanuts
good catch, you need to be restocking that one, seen Adele has got the passion for her cichlids back.

Kim&Dan
Just a few weeks ago the same thing happened with one of our heaters in a tank we were cycling... Back then I thought: I hope this never happens with fish in there... Glad to hear that you spotted it on time! Well done!
Alan
Can someone explain to me why they still have their heaters running. If you have a main tank you could save yourself the drama of cooking your fish by putting in a thermostat, set slightly above what your heater operates on, so that if the heater jambs on, the in-line thermostat will then control the heater. Cheap insurance at about $30.oo Alan
Luke*
Well...I'd say it's because no one knows about these things, or how they work, where you get them from, how you rig them up etc etc. Maybe there should be an article on it? I don't know the answers to the above questions.

Billaney
Hi Alan , Yes great idea and i guess i could do it on my 700L tank but what about the 41 other tanks 42 times $30 makes expensive insureance ( $1260 ) . But your point is well taken
Tanksman
Yeah Alan good stuff  I want to have two heaters heating four tanks that are plumbed together. I want to have the heaters operating off of one thermostat so they are working in harmony but in seperate tanks. The thermostats on them are too hard to set exactly the same. Sounds like an inline thermostat might be the trick?
Alan
Paul, it is time you heated the room and not the tanks. If you are using 150w heaters x 41 = 6,150 w. Fan heater, thermostacically controlled, = 2000 w. Why you still using heaters?? I've never know a tank to overheat using this system. I do that, and for the "special" tanks use a heater. Earlier I asked if anyone was interested in these thermostat, I had one yes reply, so I waived it. Check at your LFS they CAN get them. It is the top half of a normal heater-stat, just no heating coil. Alan

Alan
I know the feeling Paul I think you are following in my footsteps I blocked of the garage from the back forwards, insulated, then took out another 2m so I then built a carport. Solved the probs no sweat. Alan

Luke*
Fish first, answer the wife's questions later Alan, so you connect this extra thermostat to the heater so it has two?
Faran
Paul - I think your car would look lovely parked on your driveway. Getting in and out would be a serious mission though. I'd set up a system of hoists and pulleys to keep the door open and swing you clear before slowly closing it again. Converting your garage to an insulated fishroom - $5000 System of hoists and pulleys - $7000 The image of Paul flying through the air like Peter Pan - priceless! For those that don't know - Pauls driveway has a 45 degree angle and though short, you really wish the entire thing had stairs at times
