Caryl
For those who want to see what a simple light fitting looks like, made using plastic guttering... Go visit a building site as I am sure they will have offcuts of guttering. The pic shows wooden ends. You can get end caps so I don't know whether the man who built these didn't want to buy any or found it just as easy to cut out wooden ends with some ply he had lying around. The aluminium helps reflect the light downwards. A simple and effective light hood for sitting on glass lids.

PENEJANE
My husband did the same for me but he used a square form of down pipe instead of guttering. He has placed the light in the centre and then just sprayed it black. As soon as I get my computer up and running again I can upload a picture of it. Rory
i'd love to see a pic of this light going. It looks great but is the light not concentrated on one side?
Caryl
It is only a short fitting so one light at the end coped fine. The bigger ones have a bulb at each end.
Caryl
Will see if I can find a tank the right size and show you what it looks like lit.
PETEYPLECO
What wattage lamps have you used and are they available in the correct type to promote plant growth? I think I may make something like this but with one lamp at each end. FANTASTICO !

PETEYPLECO
Do they also get very hot ! ? !
Caryl
Energy saver bulbs. Get hot but no more than long fluoro's. I have nevre had problems growing plants using ordinary bulbs as opposed to expensive aquatic plant ones. Small tanks have the energy savers and big ones have plain bright white or daylight fluoro tubes. Here is a tank with a 2ft fitting on top. Single bulb. Pardon the state of the tank... slappers
i have done the same in the past but used tube lighting instead of the bulbs

jayci
What type of oxy weed have you got growing in that tank, Caryl.
Caryl
No idea as that was taken a few years ago and the tank is no longer set up. The oxygen weed was pulled out of the river flowing through the middle of Blenheim so is quite likely to be a banned one

The penalties for such offence seem abit harsh, what is it, up to 7 years imprisonment and/or 200,000 dollars fine. I don't think P manufacturer get it that hard. DutchKiwiCowboy2
Do they also get very hot ! ? ! The energy saver light bulbs don't get that hot. Anyone with a little callus on their hands could easily hold onto them. :-?
