chimera
i have 3 cleaner shrimp in my main tank and was considering placing one of them in the refugium to help keep a little with cleanup. i would imagine there would be bits of food that get sucked into the overflow and down to the refugium. is there any disadvantage of doing this? i notice cleaner shrimps seem to hang out in pairs, would this effect him? was considering replacing the cleaner in the main tank with a coral banded shrimp. thoughts? jetskisteve
depends but sometimes CB's don't get on with Cleaners
suphew
Don't you have a ton of pod's and mytis shrimp in there doing that anyway?
chimera
nope, only a few pods (not many, if any.. boom boom chish...) cleaner shrimps are obviously good for cleaning parasites off fish etc, but what other major purposes for the cleanliness of the tank do they serve?need a cleaner for around the sand bed and other areas. have snails cleaning glass etc but nothing much else in the fuge. cracker
If you have any crabs, they will cleanup crap...CB definitely..my cleaner and Cb get along fine, but the CB is a scavenger from 'Nam. My cleaner is also alone. He is currently looking for a wife. My sump has reverse lighting. I will be running a couple of damsells and a few "cleaneruperers", like crabs.....and just crabs i think. Dont want to waste a CB in the sump!
Ira
I wouldn't put a cleaner shrimp in the refugium. Seems a waste to put an expensive animal in there where you won't really see it. Pick up a bunch of glass shrimp from some rock pools and put them in there. They seem to survive indefinitely if they make it past the first month...So maybe acclimate them in a bucket over a few days so you don't have many dying? suphew
Do you know if there is a reason you don't have many pod and other critters in your sump, if they have food they breed pretty fast. Unless you have an idea why they aren't there in force I would assume the population has balanced at that level because of lack of food, therefore.... klaymann
have got 3 cleaner shrimps plus 1 bluddy large CB shrimp.. they get on fine ... tried introducing 20 odd glass shrimp to help with cleaning etc .. have never seen such carnage from mellow cleaners .. they turned into mass killers and slaughtered the glass with in about 5 minutes ... CB just cruised around picking at the dregs falling from the feast above .... as for collecting glass shrimp .. best place was the east side of long bay at low tide around the point . .. untill I found out it is still part of the reserve
