HummingBird
Last night I was putting some Dapnia in the breeding tanks I had tried (and failed, I thought) to breed my WCMM's in and I noticed some tiny highlighter blue things swimming around, which after a moment of confusion (the WCMM's were last in there two weeks ago!) I recognised to be WCMM fry. They're by far the tiniest fry I've ever seen (Never bred egg scatterers before) Anyways here's a crappy photo of one of them: Really hard to get a good pic of them, I'll try again tonight. Wok
Congrats HummingBird Now all you have to do is transfer some of that green water you have for your gba into the tank with your wcmm fry
HummingBird
I've actually got a little jar with lettuce and water in it that I set up on a window sill when I started trying to breed them, ah, the benefits of forethought
Caryl
Shine a torch down on them from above and they will reflect

Alan
How to make/obtain/cultivate infusoria. Alan
HummingBird
Yeap, they're too small to even eat baby brine shrimp or microworms at this stage. Thing is Caryl, there is a light on their tank I've noticed some of them are a lot more reflective than others, probably they're the older ones. Here're some more pics that are a bit better (You can see how tiny they are compared to the Daphnia in the right pic): These are the tanks they're in, a divided 2ft (Adults tank is on the left there) I've got the heaters set to 20c, the tanks sometimes get up to 24 in the day though :-? kiwibird
What size are WCMM's before they start breeding ,Ive just been given about 10 all different sizes and have no idea whats male's/females any help would be great please. Caryl
Not sure when they start but boys are slimmer and more streamlined, girls are rounded.
Faran
kiwibird - the major difference between males and females is the belly. Males have flat bellies and females rounded. Later on you can make out the males by the white flashes on fins when "dancing" but I'm not sure how old they are. The belly is usually a good indicator though. Alan - completely agree about snails. Ramshorns in particular (yup, invested in ramshorn stock last week!). They're awesome at cleaning the tanks up without harming fry.
Alan
Daphnia eat infusorians, which is what you should be aiming for to feed the baby WCMM. The sole purpose in a daphnia's life is to eat infusorians till they are fed to fish big enough to eat the daphnia. Snails encourage infusorians and also cleans up uneaten food. HummingBird
Yeah I know, I put the Daphnia in there before I realised there were fry in there. I took most of the Daphnia out this morning, all I could catch anyways.
Faran
I think you could have left the daphnia, just feed the tank lots of infusoria... raise/feed both at the same time, right?
caserole
I feed my baby minnows on microworm milk ( the liquid at top of culture ), it's full of yeast and bmworms the tiny fry loved it.
caserole
yeah did someone mention about having a light directly over the tank? It attracts the phototopic( spelling ?) infusoria, the fry will gather under it to eat the unseen masses.
HummingBird
Cheers for the tip, I'll try giving them some microworm milk tonight. I have noticed that the fry tend to hang around the top near the light most of the time, now that makes sense.
Alan
But with the light on the babies will be at the top and the microworms on the bottom, as they sink.. Suggestion: if you feed the M/W's then have the light shining by the bottom. I use one of those bed-side lights Alan
