I've just had enough of these pests for the past two months i've been battling to rid the tank using Kalk in a paste form and they just keep coming back in force the more i skwirt them the more that comes back is there a good reliable way to rid these pests other then the way i'm using now at the moment i have no fish in the tank the ones that have survived the Ick breakout are still in quarantine so only corals, anemones and shrimp in the tank at the mo, so i'm open to anything that wont harm them.

Layton you mentioned draino?? I'm open to use it but i want to know that it's going to be safe enough, do you know of any study cases done on it?

Kalk works as well or better. I've battled hundrends of them, as far as I am aware I have none now. I did have an epidemic once.

Kalk, easy. I tried JJ and it didn't work as effectivly as Kalk for me.

Kalk to kill 100 aipstasia approx $1.00.

When I first started using Kalk I had similar problems, I found the key is to totally cover them and the hole they are in, if any of it isn't covered it will break off and grow somewhere else. When you pull the tank down is a good time to do it, but you will need to know where they all are before you start taking the rocks out, once they are out of the water or even moved they will disappear and you will miss some.

No need to waste time with JJ or Kalk paste. For pure pH killing power (and 100% success rate for me) you need Sodium Hydroxide. You can get a lifetime supply for around $8.

The draino from the supermarket that comes as a solid form is 100% sodium hydroxide (or so it says so on the container). You mix this with a bit of water, the amount isn't really critical. Be careful to try an not get it on your hand, it can cause chemical burns (dries the skin). If you do get it on your skin you've got several minutes where you can run it under cold water for a while to dilute it, and avoid the burn occurring altogether (the point is it's not an instant burn like a fire burn, it develops slowly over 20 min or so).

Then you inject this solution directly into the aiptasia. And no more aiptasia.

Here is the chemistry behind what happens when the draino hits the tank:

NaOH + HCO3(-) ---> Na(+) + H20 + CO3(2-)

So the draino uses up a tiny bit of alkalinity to produce water, a sodium ion, and carbonate, which contributes to alkalinity. So the net effect is that you are adding water and another sodium ion, with no change in alkalinity.

It's exactly the same as using Kalk, but you are using Sodium instead of calcium. Sodium is completely soluble, so you don't end up with solids which can be accidentally eaten by stupid fish, or float onto corals. The pH of sodium Hydroxide is higher than that of calcium hydroxide, so the kill success is higher.

Draino is great. Turn all your pumps off and totally cover them. The theory is that they must pump water through their system to live. When they try to suck in water they get a month full of draino. Then they just melt away. Turn the pumps back on after 1 minute or so. I have never had any come back.

One way I've found that works is to inject PH DOWN thru a syringe into the mouth .. just watch them dissolve before your eyes ... pays to remove rock into treatment tank first as this stuff is lethal for the surrounding area in a reef tank .... drastic I know but bluddy hell does it work !! ... :o
