Bluetom
Hey, I've got tis six foot tank. It measure 1800x600X600 the only problem is it is only made form 6mm glass. I rang "tough tanks" about replacing the botom and they said that 6mm was to thin. Does anyone else have a tank like this? Would this be ok to fill up? Does Anyone have a 6ft tank they want to sell?? Cheers
Caryl
I wouldn't fill it up if it is only 6mm! You could set it up for plants, open at the top, and only filling it partway with a few smaller fish in the lower water level. What did the previous people do with it? Any bracing on it anywhere? Bluetom
I put to braces across the top, each are 600x300. the bottom has a few pieces of glass thick as the botoom broke and glass has been used to repair, so pretty much 15mm bottom
beachy
hmmm, sounds a bit dodge to me, 6x2x2 is a lot of water for 6mm glass, go with caryl's idea, 700 odd ltrs wouldnt be nice on the floor.
Bluetom
i've had a rethink, the people at tough tanks said 450mm was the highest i should fill it. So i thnk i'll run it as a plant tank, maybe a few fish. Would i need a filter if i had no fish?? I can always really on people here to give great advice Double thumbs up
Caryl
No you will not need a filter if you keep it lightly stocked and do regular water changes.
Bluetom
Thank you I have a aqua clear 802 powerhead so i'll put that in to keep the water moving nicely.
Ira
The safety factor for that tank will be .86 The numbers the glass thickness calculator gives you are conservative and you're not likely to fill it ALL the way to the top, but do you really want to use a tank that if you get slightly weaker than average glass WILL break possibly and dump over 600 liters of into your living room only giving you time to say, "Oh s..."? Bluetom
My plans now are to have a planted tank and only fill it to 3/4. ( that was what was recommended but tough tanks) and maybe have a couple of BN to keep the algae at bay, or other bottom feeeders. Sound good? Ira
Make it brackish with a couple archers and japanese rush or some other overhanging type plant. Then you can put flies in it for the archers to shoot off the plants.
beachy
Yea sounds nice, but wouldnt you rather use a 6 footer to its full potential, get some really nice fish? It would be nice planted, quite limited if you cant fill it to much though.
beachy
Ira, that sounds great, good call.
Bluetom
You're right beachy but i'm unfortunitly lacking the couple hundy to buy a new tank, and even then i may as well use the one i have seeing as it cos me $40, heaters cost me $20 and pump cost $30 so $90 for a 3/4 filled planted tank to grow plants for my other tanks sound good. I figure i'll try run it on as low budget as possible. Nice idea Ira but sounds like alot of work,
Ira
Not really any more work than you're planning. It just has a bit of salt in it. And pick up a fly culture from animates occasionally.
dee_jay_01
What about using it as a Turtle tank, you would only need to fill it half way, then add some floating platforms, some plants, 6-10 Penny Turtles and some guppies would look really nice in there. Caryl
Never heard of a penny turtle. What is it?
Bluetom
turtles would be fun, but huge investment, i'm trying to keep this tank to like a $200-$250 mark for the whole thing. Unless anyone wants to give me ten turtles, i think i'l go for the plants, but hey I'm getting some really good ideas for when can actually afford it!! Thanks heaps to you all
dee_jay_01
Ok Penny Turtles are more or less Baby Turtles, and yes they can be expensive, at about $100-$200 AUD each. But are good fun to watch, you can get various varieties like the long neck etc.
dee_jay_01
Ok then what about some Mud Skippers there good fun to have, you dont need much water, they dont jump, and they are cheap. Or you could try Hermit Crabs, Had about 10 of them when I was younger, Amazing Lil Creatures and you dont even need water for them just a top qaulity lid to put over the tank cuz their excellent climbers at going up the silicon. Ira
I don't think mudskippers or land hermits are available in NZ.
suphew
Yeah you can get mudskippers here. What about lizards? Or frogs?
Bluetom
I wouldn't mind a nice blue tongue lizard!! Anyone want to GIVE me one??   $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Faran
**The following is a joke and should not be taken seriously** Just go over to Oz with one of them apron-carrier things (that thing the lady was trying to smuggle Plecos into NZ with)... Grab a few lizards (blue tongues and Beardies) and have fun trying not to squirm when one gets loose and starts gnawing at your bits and pieces while going threough customs! livebearer_breeder
I rememba we kept Blue Tongues in Australia and they cost us a grand total of $0, just one day found them in our garden, mum always tryed shewing them away from the veges, but they didnt really take much notice of her, so i ended up keeping them, Great pets actually, Once they get to know you anyway. Bluetom
sorry to dredge up an old thread but I took another look at the tank. turns out i shouldn't rely on others measurements. Tank is in fact 1800x600x500high, so now i think i will go with it 'full' that is the usual few cm's less than full and do a bit of auqascaping to give it some nice scenary, then consider some fish, don't have a good filter so will large quantities will have to wait. What sort of quanity of fish would people recommend to start with? (I mean after it is cycled of course ) i was looking at B/N, gourami, tetras, maybe barbs. Any ideas would be appricated.
