Discus in my community tank

Blitz

Recommended Posts

A few days ago i bought 3 young red turquoise discus, that are only starting to get their colour. They are currently in my 900x450x450 tank which has glowlights, platies, guppies, corys, dwarf gourami, beta and BN. There dont seem to be any problems at the moment. Will these guys be okay in the long run?

Thanks

Hi Phil,

I'm doing the same thing (discus in a comm. tank) and people usually recommend putting the discus in their own tank. The BNs are known to "accidentally" clean the discus, which leaves abrasions and so on. I've had discus in a comm tank before and was plagued with problems. Just keep in mind that the discus are a gentle fish that prefer to be on their own. They can defintely co-inhabit a tank with other fish though!

Did you get your babies from NZ Discus? We're getting 6 from him shortly.

I have 6 Discus in with Gouramis, Neons, Mollys, and a couple of Platys, I also had a Betta but he passed on unfortunatly. There has been no inhouse fighting and even the Betta left them alone. Maybe further down the track i will give them there own tank but in the meantime thay are all doing fine and i really cant see why with the right peaceful fish in uncrowded conditions they cant be kept in a community tank.

Goldfish Pagoda? What kinds of prices? I REALLY doubt they can beat the quality and prices at New Zealand Discus. They have young red turquoise for $35! And at the size they come in, they're very strong and coming straight from the breeder. I'm getting 6 from him, but only 2 red turquoise with 2 golden crystals and 2 heckles or imported pigeon bloods.

Im sure the quality of NZ discusmans discus is very high BlueandKim, its just that i kinda went to the Pagoda to have at look at stock but kinda ended up buying the discus, im not comparing the two. The discus i have bought seem to be alright quality, all three are red turquoises and are only just getting their colouring. They cost 24.95 each.

Thanks,

Blitz

I keep my discus in a community tank as well and have no problems with them... I have rams, kribs, guppies, lots of Bristlenose, clown loaches. Discus are happy and well fed.

So I can't see any reason why your discus would not be happy in there in the long term... mine has been going for 7 months now

hey guys just wondering what ph are you keeping them at? can they be kept at 7 or is it best to keep them at lower ph?

sorry a bit off topic :D

I have never done a PH test or any water test in fact.

All i do is change about 25%of the water each week and add some stress coat at water change.

Both tall and long and three to start with and reduce this down to two if they pair. I had two pairs in a 220 ltr (3') tank and it wasn't big enough from them

migth be able to get away with 4-5 in 4' tank.

Hey, do discus like long tanks or tall tanks, i have only really seen thm in long tanks. i have got a 140L tank how many discus do you guys recommend?

I have 6 in a tall tank(900mm) but im changing to a long tank (1220) 366 litres.

The problem with tall tanks is doing any work or cleaning on the bottom of them.

My Discus thrive in the tall tank but every other discus ive seen in stores are in long tanks.

If i was to get a couple of discus is it better to keep them as a pair? and can you suggest some community fish to keep with them?

Thank you :D

6 would be better from what i've read. As for what to have with them, anything community friendly, docile, and slow swimming. The only real problem i've encountered is that Discus are slow eaters and the other fish tend to get all the food.

Unless they are actually a 'pair' you should keep more then two, unless you have a large (4 foot plus) tank in which case you might as well have more than two!

The more aggresive (normaly larger) of the two will chase the smaller often killing it, or it might starve because it cant get at the food.
