Ira
Very annoying, the bulb is only about 4 months old, but it's gone out 4 times today that I've noticed after a minute or two it lights again. Time to replace it, I guess. I don't want to spend money on bulbs! I wanna spend it on livestock!

Ira
Seems to be as far as I can tell.
Pies
IRA - Try swapping the bulbs over to confirm its a bulb issue not a contact issue. Pie
Ira
Tried that, got 3rd degree burns on my fingers, who knew MHs got so hot? hehe, Nah, I haven't done that yet. Lights are due to go out in an hour so I'll probably try swapping to one of the old ones tomorrow.
reef
I would try changing them over and if fails then get a replacement, should be under warranty. It does sound like the bulb as mine did that a few months ago.
lduncan
Tried that, got 3rd degree burns on my fingers, who knew MHs got so hot? I've done that to my arm a couple of times cleaning the tank with the halides still running... it's almost as bad as brushing past the fire coral while moving stuff around, which i have also done a several times. slow learner i guess. dhindry
It could also be possible there is a thermal cutout somewhere in the enclosure? Usually found as part of the Ballast.
Ira
Ok, I've swapped it with one of my older 10K bulbs. The old one just looks SO much brighter than the 16K bulbs. A lot yellower though. Might try a 12K next time I replace them. The one I just yanked out has some flakes of glass floating around in it, can't figure out where they came from, I don't see any chips inside it. Oh, and I went out earlier and my Sebae clown was fine. Came home after about 2-3 hours and he was dead. No idea why. Nitrates are a higher than I'd like, about 25, but that shouldn't have bothered him. PH and KH are both 8, salinity 1.027. Looks like I'll be buying a LOT of fish in a few months when I go to Christchurch. If I can find some I want.

Brianemone
stink, always a bummer to loose a fish but even more so when youve gotten attached to it
Control
It could be a small short or something in your house. MH bulbs are very sensitive to spikes. Check your heater. Aaron
Ira
And now the OTHER bulb is starting to go out. So, I'm officially NOT impressed with these Aquamedic 16K bulbs. Hey, Steve, any kind of warranty on them?
reef
Sure there must be a warranty. Bulbs last about 18 months. Lets us know how the replacements go.
Kermit
is it a screw in or double ended lamp? Reason is that maybe if it's a single ended lamp the centre contact in the lamp holder is not making contact properly with the lamp, usually the heat created from the lamps stuff the spring behind the contact preventing it push up against the lamps back contact. If so turn the lamp off wait for it to cool down and try and find something to pull the contact tab in the lamp holder forward so it will make a better contact, hope it's something as easy as this, if it works you may want to replace the lamp holder when you replace the lamp nexted. cracker
1.027 is a bit high Ira, I would drop back to .25 . Maybe your fishy didnt like it. Just My thoughts, I try not to go over .26 as a maximum. But others will be bound to say something different!!
Ira
Oops, AquaLINE not Aquamedic. It's a double ended one, Kermit.
dogmatix
What kind of unit is it ? Almost sounds like the ignitor not the bulb, very common in older style arcadia units, Dupla etc Ben
Ira
Why would the ignitor cause a problem with a bulb going out? And the old ones are working fine. It's an Arcadia "Professional deluxe" Which I'm guessing would be what you mean by older style arcadia.
jetskisteve
You need to sort yr stuff out b4 you blame a supply!!!! I have a 2x 10k from someone that are completely different colors no warranty offered tho
