Gr0in
I have built a couple of 20 gallon tanks but now im second guessing the choice of shelving. Has anyone else used bunnings garage shelving? They say they are rated to 180kg per shelf. Im picking each tank filled will be around the 100kg each. The metal is fairly light weight so being in good old Christchurch I imagine if we have any decent earthquakes the movement would just buckle and end in disaster. Thoughts? Im contemplating building custom shelving instead using 4x2 but thought I would see if anyone uses this type of shelving.
Ira
180KG per shelf and how much total? Do you really think it will hold 5 fat people? The tanks fit really well though.
alanmin4304
Many of those type of stands failed during the quakes. Generally the legs crumpled at the bottom. I had one in a shed (not storing tanks)where the legs went at the base. There is now a bar at the bottom which was not there on the old ones. hovmoller
Yes I have used same style. Also for tanks of around 100kg. I bought mine not from Bunnings but Mitre 10 and the shelves were rated for 300kg. I can't speak for what will happen in an earthquake but under normal circumstances I would say they'll be fine. Gr0in
The tanks I got made to fit the shelves but from what I've been reading they are not ideal (especially in an earthquake) so decided to build some instead. They turned out pretty well and didn't cost a fortune. Will hopefully dress them a little them a little better with some panels in the future. Adrienne
Looks good - have you given thought to diagonal bracing?
Gr0in
Yea thought crossed my mind and I might yet. It will be tied with brackets into the studs so should be ok without. Hoping to have these up and running this weekend.
