Benjansss
A couple of years ago I saw a large school of Corys in Taupo 20-30 of them this was in autumn they had no stipes or spots any idea what kind these where and if they could start a breeding population
kiwiraka
Are you sure they were corys?
Benjansss
Yes I caught one but I left outside in a bucket and the local king fisher got it :cry1: spent like an hour to get it
alexyay
Do you mean in a pond or in a waterway? I don't know of any coldwater cories but there are subtropical cories. The bronze cory will go to relatively low temps (~20 degrees) - http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/c ... neus_2.jpg
Benjansss
No in the lake very close to shore less then Half a meter deep as for the type I think it was a bronze or a emerald
hovmoller
No photographic evidence? The first thing I would do if I caught a Cory in Lake Taupo is take a picture :lar:

Benjansss
I've caught tons of bullheads and these where both a different Colour and a different shape the where about 2 cms long
Ira
I've gotta agree, with the only evidence being the memories of an 8 year old kid...By far the most likely is that it was bullhead catfish or some kind of native bullies rather than a tropical fish surviving and breeding in large numbers well outside its normal comfort range. Benjansss
There's no way these where bull heads it was grey not brown but it had whiskers so not a bully my dad remembers it the same way I do

kiwiraka
Also bullheads vary in colour. They're not always brown.
alexyay
Quite likely a bullhead or similar - if you ever see something like that in the future which doesn't belong it's important to photograph it and report it to DOC. It's unlikely to be cories simply because of how cold it gets here unless they were just recently dumped during a summer or something. Benjansss
Yeah I do report that kinda. Thing now I reported the start of a parrits feather infestation maybe it was an illegal release of something weirder things have been snuck in

Cories are possible, in my early days of fish keeping I took a petshops "advice", apparently they are "pond fish" and can live in cold water (I lived in the otaki gorge in kapiti so it got quite cold) I started with five and had three left after 2 years. They were never very active and never grew. But I doubt there would be large numbers in lake taupo (maybe a couple of released fish) but they need warm water to breed and I doubt anyone would dump 20-30 (sorry :nilly: ) Cories.
