alexyay
We're wondering what these fish are - apparently given to someone with no name (they were also told "they are definitely all female"). Apparently the fish have not shown any other colours/markings other than what's in the pic. I'm leaning towards a Rasbora sp, both Rasbora paviana and Rasbora dorsinotata look very similar but aren't on the list. Does anyone know whether they're in the country at all? (sorry for the poor pics)
land_lubber
How big are they? they almost look like NZ native fish to me.
alexyay
"About finger length" - I took a quick look through the NZ natives on FNZAS but didn't find anything similar but I know pretty little about our natives unfortunately D:
kiwiraka
Definitely not native....
Ira
Hard to say exactly, but there are a handful of possibilities, a bunch of similar looking rasboras. Brilliant Rasbora? Just checked, Rasbora einthovenii is on the import list.
kiwiraka
*Edit I'm changing my guess to rasbora paviana! ;-)
Ira
*Edit I'm changing my guess to rasbora paviana! ;-) Not on the import list though* *Assuming it came in correctly identified.
kiwiraka
After further enlightenment I think it's a fish! :-P Can I please have a link to that import list?

alexyay
It looks exactly almost like it but yeah, it's not on the list (so if that's correct it was most likely imported under a different name). I had a small list of possibilities but no exact matches Rasbora: Rasbora argyrotaenia, Rasbora cephalotaenia, Rasbora daniconius, Rasbora einthovenii Barbs: Esomus danricus
boban_nz
Rasbora paviana Rasbora sumatrana Rasbora cephalotaenia Rasbora einthovenii Otherwise, Hello from Serbia
kiwiraka
Rasbora paviana seems to be the only one with the correct stripe length.....
kiwiraka
So if they're not on the import list does that mean they aren't legal or are we just not allowed to bring in new fish and the current ones can be bred?
Adrienne
If any species of fish is not on The List then it has not been approved, by MPI, as a species that is currently allowed in the country. Just because a fish is not on the current list does not mean it has never been on it. There are species in the country, including goldfish, that came in many years ago and are still in existence. Just like fish that are on the list, that doesn't mean they are here or will ever come here, it just means they are allowed in.
alexyay
Are those photos taken in NZ? (excellent photography as usual!)

alexyay
Yes, photos were taken in NZ. Cool, that means they've been/are in NZ so could definitely be a possible ID (Y)
