aotealotl
this is a good explanation about a new setup: http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/cycling.php
Caryl
You only need water ager if the water is chlorinated, as far as I know.
F15hguy
are you planning a fish or fishless cycle?? if this is for your goldfish, I would recommend a live bacteria solution just to give you a bit of a safety margin (goldfish are mucky buggers)
aquadude
this is for the new tank that I intend to have guppies and bristlenose

Caryl
What is the point of doing all that?
aquadude
Did the petshop see me coming according to the cycle bottle reduces fish loss more nitrifiers keeps aquariums heathly rapidly matures new aquariums realeases massive amounts of beneficial bacteria into the tank.this helps prevent fish loss
Caryl
I have never used chemicals myself as I believe slow and steady the natural way is the best. It has seemed to me that such additives do not increase the set-up time by much. Once you have added the stuff, you must also add something for the bacteria to eat or they will die before you add the fish.
aquadude
what would you recommend...pinch of fish flakes or....?
Caryl
I would not like to suggest anything as I have no experience of using chemicals. Perhaps someone else, who has used such products, will advise.
rabid
Dont worry, petshops see everyone coming, thats what they are for. Petworld was it?
F15hguy
I haven't used Cycle much, but normally, its best to add your first fish with your Cycle dose to provide the ammonia for the cycle to establish properly. (not your full stocking, just a couple of smaller fish)
Adrienne
I hate to tell you but there is no use adding cycle if you are not going to add fish straight away. Cycle adds bacteria to the filter which aids the cycling process. You need to add something ie fish that produce waste at the same time otherwise the bacteria will die as there is nothing to feed them. Add a bristlenose or two depending on the tank size, they are good at producing waste. Guppies tend not to be the best fish for newly established tanks anymore. Oh, and Aquadude the petshop did not see you coming but perhaps they should have explained how to use the cycle etc a bit more. Did you tell them you were new to this?
