aotealotl
do we have White Cloud Mountain minnow (Tanichthys albonubes) here in NZ ? does someone breed them ? I am looking for some I can put together with my Axolotl as a toy (that sounds very mean) and as food (that sounds even worse). :cr8:

disgustipated
no worries mate. there are tonnes of WCMM up here in auckland, couple of variations of them too. they'd make great self sustaining food colony for axys. they are usually on trademe, you would have to arrange shipping but being a hardy and cheap fish then shipping is a pretty good option for you. F15hguy
Very common and cheap (around the $4-6 mark per fish) and LFS should have them in stock during summer they breed in outdoor ponds and tubs (I had some breed in a big pot I had outside) other good option for your axo is leopard fish, just set up a small breeding tank (25L or so should do for a male and a couple of females) next to the axo tank and send the fry to their doom, its not cruel, its just nature with a helping hand holding a net
disgustipated
what is the correct name for leopard fish? if you google it you just get ctenopoma
camtang
Very common and cheap (around the $4-6 mark per fish) That is hardly cheap for a feeder fish
F15hguy
it is when you buy 2-5 of them, chuck them in a big barrel and harvest them later, leopard fish are Phalloceros caudimaculata
camtang
that still seems like a large investment to me for feeders
disgustipated
how much do you get feeders for?
camtang
free or dirt dirt cheap for a massive bag. I think i payed about $40 for about 200 guppies not long ago, didnt feed them all now i have a bunch of guppies doing what guppies do
disgustipated
guppies are tropical bro, we needs coldwater
camtang
have heard plenty of storys of people keeping them in ponds or unheated tanks up your ways. or via sun heating
disgustipated
yeah, same. doesn't really mean the fish are comfortable, or that it's not cruel to keep them in cold water. i also notice that guppies in cold water don't breed as frequently, take twice the time to grow to adulthood, and don't colour up very well either. camtang
they are being used for food, isnt it the same principle? especialy if the fish arnt big enough and have to chew once or twice
disgustipated
i'd prefer a fast painful death over several months of slow torture.. wouldn't you?
disgustipated
quick look on trademe and they are sold for $1 to $3 fishguy usually gives retail price (and fair enough considering his job) maybe hit up one of these trademe sellers to see if they will ship you some? camtang
i'd prefer a fast painful death over several months of slow torture.. wouldn't you? Would depend on the type of torture and who is administering it. :sml1: :sml1: :sml1:

aotealotl
thank you all, next time I am in Dunedin I will buy some and start breeding them... :cr2: (...the water temperature is exactly the reason why I don't want Guppies) :cr9:

GrahamC
Why can't you just catch some whitebait and use them as live food?
blueether
Why can't you just catch some whitebait and use them as live food? Out of season, and my god - 2 of the 3 whitebait species are endangered or threatened and the others are in decline.
aotealotl
Why can't you just catch some whitebait and use them as live food? no chance [angry santa smily], I rather give them a chance to grow into a nice Kokopu... (...I do not even like the idea that someone would do that, using whitebait as live food)
GrahamC
As opposed to catching them in a net and letting them suffocate? The ethical position is no different between feeding live WCMM ( which are a species basically extinct in their native habitat ), and whitebait, some of which are endangered here.
