disgustipated
helllo. i have a new house which has a nicely fenced section, which i will be putting a pond into. i would also like to get a bird, such as a duck, a goose or a chicken. i do live in a dense residential area so i want something that won't make too much noise. i like the idea of geese because they eat grass. ducks are cool animals too. what birds have you kept? what advise do you have for me, what do you suggest for my situation? camtang
chooks are fine in residential areas, just give them a decent run and they will be fine

disgustipated
yeah, i kept chickens for years as a kid. local council lets you have up to 6. but i am looking for something with a bit more personality than a chicken. what about phesants? i will obviously be clipping their wings regularly. ZombieFish
does anyone know if geese lay eggs daily, and how big they are in comparison with chicken eggs?
lmsmith
I've always wanted a pet duck, so that would be my vote! It would be awesome if you could get whatever it is as an egg and hatch and hand-raise it. How cool would that be?
disgustipated
yeah that is what i am intending on doing. well, maybe an egg, or a chick. i could just place the egg under my blueys heat lamp (make sure bluey doesn't eat it) and it would probably hatch. then feed it mash or something. yeah that's a good idea. will start looking through trademe
SamH
It would be awesome if you could get whatever it is as an egg and hatch and hand-raise it. How cool would that be? You can buy fertile eggs on TradeMe.

lmsmith
i can't find any duck eggs on trademe You could always go on a duckling kidnapping mission!
disgustipated
that is a good idea actually. last time i tried to catch a duckling i almost stepped on one in front of my kids. potentially could have scarred them for life. Caryl
Ducks can make an awful mess in a pond. I don't thionk geese lay daily and their eggs are almost double hen sized ones.
lmsmith
If you had a HUGE pond and just a pair of ducks it might be ok! You could always buy those FX5s!!!
disgustipated
i have a filter from one of those inflatable ring swimming pools that i plan to use. and i'll fill it with oxygen weed, and change the water a lot. couple of goldfish. one duck shouldn't make it too bad. Discusguru
You'll need more than 2 goldfish to feed the duck :slfg:
Dr A
Make sure you read up on the council bylaws whatever bird you get, there are rules about the distances from birds to the fence etc. I know somebody that got rid of some well behaved bantams after some silly neighbour started complaining to the council daily. disgustipated
some people just like to complain. on the first day i moved in here, i put my big pirate flag up on the wall. later on in the day, the neighbour came over and asked me to take it down because she didn't like looking at it, apparently it reminded her of death. which means she was looking through my window into my room and at the flag. weirrrrrrd.
