ghostknifesrule
we have a 35 litre tank and each time i put fish in they tend to go belly up i have cleaned it out today using hot soapy water and rinsed it out under the outside garden tap i upgraded my daughters guppys to it and already one has gone belly up i am so confused why this is happening.A while ago my partner brought some chiclids of trade me and the cold water they arrived in smelt so funky im wondering if there is some KILLER bacteria in the tank or what i have changed from using the internal filter that came with the tank to a another filter witch hasnt killed fish any ideas
SamH
hot soapy water That could be your problem. Only clean it with hot water or cleaners that 100% evaporate. 35L is fairly small, it could be stress from a small tank. Do you have a test kit? ghostknifesrule
by hot soapy i mean like a pea size of soap and it was under running water for over 30 mins and ph test kit i have
Godly3vil
I would say it is the soapy water, try using vinegar next time you clean them out. That's what I use and then thoroughly scrub it using cold water. Any soapy residue is enough to kill fish especially in a small tank like that. Also have you made sure the heater was working? Did you let the tank heat up before you added the guppy? Last but not least did you use a filter from another tank or is it one that hasn't been running for awhile? Tank is probably not cycled enough to add even guppies if that's the case.
Dana
Sorry to hear you've lost fish. I've found detergent has a way of hanging around. Even after thorough rinsing. It leaves a residue very fine, and toxic. I spent 11 hours cleaning my new tank with vinegar purely to avoid detergent. Either that or it's chlorine in your tapwater or not cycled. More likely to be these reasons than bacteria or a parasite. Tank water can smell a bit funky, it's supposed to. Hope you manage to sort it soon &c:ry

Godly3vil
Pretty much nails it down to using soapy water to clean it then I think.

Godly3vil
Guppys seem to be one of the hardest fish to keep alive in the last few years, all the ones I have bought from the LFS have kicked the bucket pretty quick even though all the water perimeters are fine. SamH
all the ones I have bought from the LFS have kicked the bucket pretty quick even though all the water perimeters are fine. I've had similar experiences with import males lately, it's frustrating.
F15hguy
Tank water can smell a bit funky, it's supposed to. only time water should smel at all should be when the fish have been transported in the bag for a long time. +1 on soap in the water, VERY hard to get rid of. Guppies shouldn't be hard to keep, should be one of the hardiest fish around as long as they don't get stressed (although this reputation has led to a lot of abuse. imported guppies recently have been a waste of time, good bodies, crap tails and a bit of colour, we should be producing a LOT better locally
Sheepsnana
35L of death. Sounds about right. Get a 60L tank  Oh, and don't use soap.

Sheepsnana
nano hater, you need larger smaller love (and that IS good gramma) I know you think I need to enjoy smaller tanks more, but it is not going to happen.
ghostknifesrule
ok so i left the guppies in their tank for the night to my amazement they were all still alive i also put a couple of drops of white spot treatment in the tank it saved my last of guppies that came out of that tank
Godly3vil
Why did you add any white spot treatment? Are they showing any signs of whitespot?
F15hguy
stress coat would have been a better option, increases the slime layer protecting them from any possible residues
ghostknifesrule
im using what has worked befor all my tanks i put 2 drops of white spot in when they are first setup and i used stress coat
Godly3vil
You really shouldn't use any medicine unless you are 100% sure the fish need it. Especially if you are not following dosing instructions as it will more than likely cause more harm than good. Also salt and higher temp works a lot better to cure white spot/ich in my experience.
