Bay7
As title says really. Do you turn your aquarium lights off when you go to bed?
camtang
yes, when i go to bed or when the timer turns them off for me
Sheepsnana
Automated timers are only about $6. Lights are only on for set time or else fish will get stressed and algae will go nuts
F15hguy
depends on if you decide to go with live plants or (boo hiss )plastic best to keep a schedule for lighting to prevent stress, and to prevent algae blooms though btw how did the plants settle in??? Bay7
Cheers all. Advice taken on-board. What if the fish want to stay up later than me though....they may be waiting up to watch the late film or something  @ F15hguy: So far so good mate, but its only been a day. Fingers crossed. SamH
I've found timers to be more important to the health of plants than fish. Fish are awake with ambient light but plants need more direct light for a consistent period.

MarkLB
Plants and fish are diurnal. A dark period is essential to their well being.
Ira
Plants and fish are diurnal. A dark period is essential to their well being. I managed to wipe out $1-2000 worth of corals by incorrectly resetting the timer before leaving on vacation. Lights were on for 2 weeks straight, housesitter thought they were supposed to be on all the time.
GrahamC
These days one should be able to monitor one's tanks remotely to check on their health. Holidays should not be a time when one's pets are exposed to major health issues.
