Fruju
I was wondering how many people have attempted a marine reef nano tank and if they had any details on how they did it? Did they find costs to be about as high as a more 'mainstream' sized tank? Also, is it possible to have a non-algae covered tank without using RO unit water? F15hguy
haven't had a go myself, but have heard it can be done, and reasonably cheaply as long as you have all the skills required. and yes it is possible to have algae free tank without RO water, they had them before RO units were around, have a look into older methods, there is some decent knowledge there, plus you find a lot of "new" things really aren't
marinefish4life
My first marine tank was 22 litres and it was hell, it was really hard to keep params right

F15hguy
wow, 22L, thats extreme nano, most reef keepers consider 75-100L nano

F15hguy
awesome tanks!! my only gripe with reefers is that their tanks are always showing off in dark rooms with lighting to make the corals etc... flouresce. it kinda gives me the mental image of someone locked in their rooms since the 80's

Joe
Check out thise acropora tank that uses 10K XM Halide bulbs! Not a nano, but it just shows that you don't need to use fancy lighting for some corals to get them to look nice http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2007-12/totm/index.php The blue T5HO's are used as moonlights and do not run while the halides are on. Phantom
I had a 22L nano marine as well. Had no problems with it. Didn't use RO water either. No skimmer, used purigen and carbon in the filter. Had 3 coral frags, fire shrimp and a small damsal in it. That was until I got my 450L tank, everything went in there. puttputt
3 400w xm halides seems pretty fancy to me, certainly alot of light.
Joe
Well the tank is loaded with acropora. From what I've read they need quite a lot of light
puttputt
yes they do Joe  , hence my post. They need alot of good light, they seem to have it so no real shock that they look good.
Fruju
But with such a small volume swings in the chemistry would be rather common no? How do running costs compare to say a 200L freshwater? Salt is the ongoing cost right? (Excluding food/lighting/power)
raeh1
man those tanks are awesome. Some hard core set-ups to run them. My wife insists everything must fit in the tank.
