#!CrunchBang
The ARC got accumulated into the supercity council, By-law should still stand until it's reviewed.
Sunbird73
:rotf: nice, there is a huge problem with them out there, problem with cats is they kill for fun, dogs normally kill then eat (unless the animals too large) they even have problems with cats killing roos well that's a load of rubbish, of course dogs kill for fun! My dog would have killed any ducks he could catch (he only caught two, we ate one ) and there were those two staffies that chased a cat in through the cat door and mauled it to death in its own house. Dogs are well known killers of kiwi....
alanmin4304
The question was about blue toungue skinks rather than cats and dogs.

alanmin4304
Tell the operator that you wish to speak to the person concerned about the legal status of blue tougue skinks in the greater Auckland area.
reptilez
Just phoned up the Auckland Regional Council and they said that it is a definite no for buying, breeding and selling them in Auckland. He also advised that anyone who is keeping them is breaking the law and could be prosecuted. I have seen a few posts from Auckland members on here talking about their blue tongue skinks so i would say that it is best to keep quiet... :cr12:

alanmin4304
I think the advice may not be correct. My understanding is that if you have them you may keep them but you cannot breed, sell advertise for sale or buy and bring in to the Auckland region. calculator
Well how does everyone who has them, get them in the first place? They own them before the bylaw was passed.
reptilez
That is not the case with the majority of people though.
Insect Direct
most people wouldn't know the council has made a special rule for this animal. what is with that anyway // probably some councillor with a fair of skinks?
alanmin4304
It would have been a bylaw of the old Regional Council before amalgamation and is in the same catagory as some other animals such as ferrets. The problem will be that the bylaw is now administered by someone who knows nothing about it and has no interest---probably someone who was previosly trying to control pest plants. This is how the council keeps your rates down---dumping more jobs on people who are flat out doing something else already. The Councilors are probably having their free refreshments and still think the staff are all leaning on shovels. The main problem with blue tougues is that they have live young and so do not need the right conditions to incubate eggs.
Insect Direct
wonder if they found a colony in a park or something. they are hardly prolific. is a bit of an ask for one council to try inforce a ban. :dunno:
alanmin4304
As I understand it MPI (maf) can ban or control animals or plants nationwide but Regional Councils (or Unitary Authorities such as Auckland) can introduce controls if they think there is a particular problem in their area (over and above national controls). Some people on one side of the Bombay Hills cannot perceive that the real world may be different to their situation and that an animal or plant may not survive in Bluff but will be a real pest in the north. Some of us southern oldies understand this because we use to eat jaffas in the pictures as kids. A lot of the really bad plants that could be a disaster in the north just would not survive the winter even in Christchurch (Salvinnia and water hyacinth for example. I know this because in the "good ol days" I use to bring these down from up north and sell them to the pet shops"). There are however patches of microclimate where they might---hence the national ban.

alanmin4304
Not a chance. If there was I would be at the top of the list. I have sold every aquatic noxious weed available to the shops in the past ( before they were declared noxious weeds). Blueies are not a problem for me as they do not do a single solitary thing for me. If people continue to be idiots with some animals like red eared sliders and releasing them into waterways it is probable that more animals may be added to the list. My brother came over from Queensland a while ago and freaked out when he found out we were breeding red ears. They are shot on site over there. Most animals have the potential to be a nuisance given the right conditions.
disgustipated
:gopo: i have also worked as a noxious weed dealer in the past.
