Jaide
Looks like a powerhead of some kind but as I've never used them I don't know how they work.
livingart
put it in the tank and point it in the direction you want the water to flow  it should have a coarse sponge inside it could also, dependent on size, be used as a sump pump
Ira
You put it in the water. You plug it in. It blows water out the front. Not particularly hard to use. Just aim it where you want some water moving. Looks like you're missing some bits though, to use it as a powerhead you'll want some suction cups to stick it to the side of the tank, it should have come with a fitting that slots into the back that the suction cups mount to. Jaide
So it doesn't work as a filter, it just moves water around? It doesn't seem to pull apart.

livingart
the grille bit comes off you can sometimes take the grille off and attach to a stand pipe for undergravel filter you can also use it to pump water to an overhead filter tray on your tank
F15hguy
or pull grill off, attach a long hose and it becomes a power water pistol

F15hguy
trade me it, they worth about $50 - $100 in shops new, depending on size
twinkles
If it doesn't come apart, attach filter wool/sponge etc to the intake bottom part with a rubber band, then sit it on the gravel or wedge it in place with wood if it has no suction cups. Perfectly good filter.
Jaide
Well it certainly packs a punch - I just tried it out in a bucket of water and flooded my kitchen! It has filter wool inside so must be able to pull apart - I'll have another look next weekend and see if I can try it out in a tank. Thanks for your help and advice everyone
Ira
You just grab the bottom half where the intake grill is and yank it off. Or get your fingernails into the seam between the halves and pry it apart I have a few of the smaller versions of that, or very similar looking anyway.
