F15hguy Posted June 14, 2012 Report Share Posted June 14, 2012 IMHO unless the fish are supplied from a specialist breeder who knows exactly where they came from then there is no garrantee that they are what they say they are. most captive bred rift lake cichlids are probably not 100% pure anyway. and even wild caught fish can (and quite commonly are) natural hybrids. Im not against keeping pure strains (in fact I try and keep natural fish myself) but I do not agree with writing off a fish due to its heritage. In this case we were discussing a empress crossed red zebra which could not be further from natural species they should be pet food IMO. Joe Posted June 14, 2012 Report Share Posted June 14, 2012 yes it would be a shame to waste tank space on hybrids... such as platies, swordies, guppies, parrot cichlids, flowerhorns etc..... I was refering to Africans. Like some of the F1 fish that have been imported - it would be a shame if people were to hybridize those Even a lot of specifically-bred hybrids aren't nice IMO. Whether somebody likes hybrids or not is a matter of opinion. Personally I think all those hybrid species you listed (especially parrots and flowerhorns) are a waste of tank space and I'd never dream of keeping them :sick: But if you like them then that's cool with me The thing I like about this hobby is that there's something for everyone. I just wish that people would be more careful when hybridizing fish and make sure that they don't breed out the natural morphs altogether. I promote the keeping of pure blood lines though for the main reason that if a species becomes endangered then we have a captive supply of them. many live bearers are extinct in the wild but thriving in aquariums. Joe Posted June 14, 2012 Report Share Posted June 14, 2012 Yeah that's pretty much how I feel too haha I also am not a huge fan of normal neons, but I don't mind them. I'm getting Green Neons (next week for sure!) which are way cooler and I want to breed them in my 140L aquarium which is a good size for breeding lots of small fish. The thing that I like most about these fish is that they are very uncommon and rarely bred in captivity because people like normal neons or Cardinals, so they are probably much closer to a wild generation since they are mainly wild-caught. I don't think that they're mass-bred in Asia like Cardinals or normal neons. I'll try and find out for sure though because it would be interesting to know.
