Sophia
if I were to put some in the same tank would I breed hybrids?
blueether
I believe that the golden minnows a just a colour morph, some correct me if i'm wrong
alanmin4304
As above=a colour morh--will cross breed. Depends what genes are dominant but probably get normals split to goldens. Breed then to each other and you should get some of each.
Sophia
so I won't be cast into the pit of Hybrid Haters if I mix them? Tell me now or else
alanmin4304
You may do. The problem is the next generation--you wont know which fish is carrying the recessive gene and which are straight
livingart
you are not creating an interspecific hybrid they are the same fish http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hybrid_(biology)

caserole
I'm crossing gold males with grey wcmm deliberately right now!! And I don't see anything wrong with it!
livingart
can only make the gold strain stronger may also give you a deeper gold colour in the future
Sophia
really? why and how? (to both of you) Caserole, have you done this before or is it a new project? How is it turning out?
livingart
personally i have found breeding yellow to yellow over a few generations can lighten the yellow by breeding back to the normal colour then breeding those resultant animals can help to deepen the yellow if i can equate it to a painting set in a simple form blue and yellow make green if you remove the blue you are left with yellow putting a bit of the blue back in can make the yellow darker this will all be dependant on the way the gene for yellow is expressed
caserole
Ok Stuff it, I was keeping the project between myself and a mate in Dunner's It's a new project sophia( I do have hatched eggs ), the grey female are High fins. The final goal is Gold High Fin wcmm. When I breed the fry together in 2.5 - 3 months I should get some gold high fins, not many, in fact very few but all I need is 1 male ( to breed back to his 50/50 sisters )but a pair would be great. This is not anything new, they have them in other country's. I just thought I'd like to make them as I've not seen them around.
livingart
nice project caserole good luck should produce some nice fish
Sophia
That sounds great. I like the long fins... was going to get those instead of gold but some of the fins looked nipped and I was a bit worried about fin rot. Of the gold I have 2 males and 2 females and 1 that is undecided - doesn't have the colour in the fins but has a golder body than the 2 girls. I thought I could get another 5 WCMM and just see what fry emerged. I seem to do better with accidental breeding than purposeful but is that too lazy to get a result? caserole
cheers, It's something a bit different and a lot easier then guppy genetics. :smln:
livingart
:slfg: you want to try amphibian genetics even the experts don't understand them
blueether
A couple of my WCMM have fins edged in deep yellow, almost orange, where most are pale lemon. I want the get these darker ones to breed at some time...

blueether
Something funny I just found out: If you shine the light through the side of the tank WCMM will swim/display on almost their sides or vertically :slfg:
