Devo
Hi native fish fans. I'm a new member on the forum, but I used to keep many tropical, and marine fish. I was also part of the initial Native Fish group, & for a number of years I kept many types of native fish. A firm favourite was my Giant Kokopu. He was caught in an eel trap in the Waikato, I kept him in a 6ft aquaria, & thanks to Biosuppliers, he was fed on live locuts & wax moth lavae...plus anything else I could find, like cicada when in season. I recently came across an unfinished sketch I did, must have been done some 15 yrs ago! Thought twice about posting it, but I know native fish fans would appreciate even my poor attempt to capture the majestic qualities of our Giant Kokopu. I'm enjoying the posts on the forum, & it's great to see so many people now keeping our native fish. Cheers, Andrew.

blueether
Welcome, always good to see another native keeper. Really nice rendition of a Giant kokopu, I think that you must have used this photo as a reference

Zev
I like it unfinished as well. The fins are a bit different in the pic Blue, or maybe they just like staring at cameras in that particular way.

The fins are a bit different in the pic Blue, or maybe they just like staring at cameras in that particular way. They do seem to like to look out into the room like that, probably looking for me and thinking "when is he coming with more food, I'm sure I can fit another bite in." :nfs:
Stella
Nice! Captures 'lurking in the shadows' really well
Devo
Thanks for the comments. If I get inspired again to do some more to this, I would like to add the fascinating markings that make Giants unique...but then I may just leave it as is... As Blue & Stella have pointed out, this seems to be a classic position for Giants. Mine would typically sit in the shadows under a large piece of driftwood, and as I approached he would swim out, just enough to be seen, then flare his fins in preparation to pounce on any live food that was offered. Anyone know how long Giants are expected live for? I'd also be interested to know how long people have had them live in aquaria. Cheers, Andrew. blueether
Niwa says 20y, I believe that Charles Mitchell had one that he had had for 8 years. I wonder if she is still alive?
