beachy
Every time i do a water change, my fish seem to get really hungry, does anyone know why this is?
HummingBird
Pavlovian conditioning? could be that seeing you makes them think you're going to feed them. Then again, how do you know they're hungry?
beachy
I have a borneo tiger, and a bichir, they are usually quite timmid and like to hide but about an hour after a water change they come up to me and beg like dogs for a feed, when i feed them they cant get enough, and fast enough. Ira
Definitely a pavlovian response. They've trained you well.
morf
what is their habitat like in the wild? sometimes a water chage causes a temp drop in the tank - in the wild that can be caused by a flood and that can wash food downstream some fish are actually encouraged to spawn by a big water change to drop the temp. chimera
that would have been my suggestion too morf. so does the temperature drop enough during water changes? or perhaps its because the goodness in the new clean water gets them so drunk they need to eat to sober up
beachy
Yea i dont know, the water temp usually stays the same, i'm wondering if its something to do with the water conditioner i use(stress coat) maybe its the aloe in it? or could it be something to do with the clorine in the water? Caryl
My fish are always more active after a water change - and always act like they are starving for that matter.
Brianemone
my wife makes a nice pavalova, but i dont think that it affects the fish's appitite with the water change because the fish are in another room and so they cant smell it. beachy
Sweet cheers guys, it doesnt bother me that they get hungry, i'd rather have hungry fish, than fish that wont eat at all.
