Last Sunday the heater in my 2ft tank broke and instead of maintaining the temperature at a moderate 24 degrees it just kept on heating. I caught it at about 27 degrees, thankfully only one fish died and that was a goldfish. They were all moving really, really fast though.

Hahah, what are the odds seeing you here eh. What's up with NZAF (42 wise) by the way, the forums are down and I've got no idea what's going on.

Right now I've got about 10 Axolotls (juveniles, about 10cm right now), 2 common plecos, 1 red spot pleco and 1 bristlenose catfish (juvenile) in a 4ft tank.

I've got another smaller tank with 9(I think) Axolotls in it.

My 2ft is the one that's currently at 24 (or was unitl the heater broke - it's sitting around 23 right now, I'm going to buy another heater soon) has 5 bristlenose catfish (juveniles), 4 corydoras, 1 chinese algae eater, 1 borneo sucker and a goldfish. I'm going to get some more tropical fish for this tank and then I'll raise the temperature to 26.

I'm getting a 3ft tank soon hopefully to put the Axolotls in and I'm going to turn the 4ft into a tropical community tank.

What fish do *you* keep?

I've kept all sorts in the past i won't get into it. Since I moved out of home ive only kept the 1 community tank going I will get one of my tanks back from my parents soon. But these days im triying to stay with small fish with alot of colour Tetras and livebearers. I'm giving away my 2 angels and putting more effort into breeding my guppies.

A little tip I might give you about that heater. It maybe the summer heat that has kept the tank water above 24. Test your heater in the coolest part of the house in a chilly bin befor you throw it away.

My worst disaster, which I am yet unsure is my fault, happened last night. I had a new 700Ltr tank put downstairs and was going to be my Discus display tank when they get better (See Diseases Post) After 3 weeks or so with water in it, setting it up and cycling, everything looked nice so I put in 3 platties which lasted 2 days fine so yesturday we decided to put in all our growing Angels (65 in all) and our Dwarf Neon Rainbows (over 100). Checked 11:30 last night and all looking great.

This morning at 6am I got an alarming wakeup call from a near on histerical wife.

"All the fish are Dead!" "All the water has gone and they are Dead!!!!!"

So I stumbles down the stairs to find she had hit the nail fair on the head, 600+ Ltrs gone AWOL and dry dead fish everywhere, heaters popped, filters making some ugly grinding noises and pump drowned no longer working. Only managed to save 1 Pepper Cat and 1 BN.

Dwarf Neons were the first and only fish my wife has bred and her favorites especially in a large school.

Bizare thing is that I could have made more mess on the floor by dropping a 10ltr bucket. Its damp everywhere but no puddles. Must have drained out the front of the house.

It is disturbingly easy for these things to happen. Many years ago, with a large goldfish tank, I had a siphon hose sitting on top with one end dangling outside the tank. The other end slipped into the water at some point and somehow it started siphoning. Fortunately I noticed before the water dropped below the half-way point. Strangely enough, almost like Bilbo's case, there was just a small damp patch, a centimeter across, beneath the tank. The leakage has been slow enough that it seeped through the carpet and between the floorboards rather than build up.

I was lucky, the fish barely noticed. Sorry to hear about your loss Bilbo.

It was in an unused room straight on a concrete floor. Looks like water has gone behind the room under the house and from there out a storm water drain.

Both those points are good as there is no real damage to anything else.

Crack looks to have started about the middle of the 1500x750 base and gone out in 3 directions from there.
