I've found the one in Newmarket to be okay. Not great, but nothing too bad.

what upset you about the Onehunga one?

The tanks were almost all empty and left looking untidy and those that were filled where absolutely dirty and this massive tank was filled but had brown algae in it and weird matter floating on the surface. Not too mention how bad the fish looked and the dead fish behind the tanks and on the floor.

But what really got me going was that the asian guy who worked there was following me around like a dog and very, very close might I also add. I had to tell him to stop following me, I think I slightly embarrassed him?

that sounds awful.

Now I remember the Dominion Rd one was not great for turtles, they had way too many in the tank, all stacked on top of each other trying to bask.

Perhaps you could let SPCA know, I think they were helping Pet Stop out with some training a while back

We visit the Dominion Road one sometimes when we're out that way. Mainly because they have the sponge filters I like, that none of the shops out east seem to carry. We've never bought fish there and I hardly even look at the tanks because they look like they need a good clean. Can't say I've ever had an experience like that, but i've pretty much just gone in, got what I wanted and left. I think I spend longer at Animates.

I know they were being investigated a few months back. I worked at a pet shop 5-6 years ago, and the only times we ever lost animals (excluding fish) were when we had rats dumped on the doorstep in a cage and they were too far gone to save, or someone in one case gave us sick guinea pigs that needed to be put down. Both times I cried because it was just awful. I can't even understand then, how people, especially people working in the pet industry, can care so little that this happens.

I would make a complaint. If they've made the news in the past for neglect and it's happening all over again they deserve to be shut down.

The Newmarket one opened up not long ago very close to my work so have been in there quite a few times to check out products.. I never buy anything because I think their fishtanks are are horror show with diry tanks and manky looking fish and REALLY BAD (if any) labelling on the tanks.

Besides it seems the staff is incredibly poorly educated in the animals they are selling..

Don't like these shops at all :x

I was looking for bio balls the other day for my sump, after buying hff out of their cheap bulk deal headed to pet stop newmarket. Their price was $2 per ball haha i almost died, asked the girl working there and she said it wasnt a mistake and they couldnt do a deal for bulk. At that price it would be one expensive sump.

LOL the Onehunga store tried to sell me a large coral piece for $60 at $80/kg. I obviously declined.

I concur. It seems they don't even care about the tanks or animals and are only interested in trying to sell their over priced rubbish.

I went to Onehunga store about 3 months ago and that big tank in the front of the shop looked like it had too many fish and lots of staghorn... then there were all these tanks out the back that were covered in algae and/or empty and anything inside just looked plain sad.

I sniffed about for some steal deals on a light fitting and then got out as quickly as possible. I don't think I would buy anything alive from there. It's a shame - all they had to do was clean the tanks, move the fish to a more eye level-buy level zone together and it would have been much more inviting.
