kuhli loach
great! still making a cave out of bogwood and river rocks for fish to hide in but will take your advice about the java fern
kuhli loach
would the apistos be happiest if they were the only fish in the tank (besides Kuhlis) or should i get golden pencilfish as well?
Joe
They will be happy if there are other fish in the tank. I think the shoal of 10 Cardinals, and maybe 5 Pencilfish, will look cool.
kuhli loach
2 Cockatoo dwarf cichlids 5 kuhli & golden Kuhli loaches 5 pencilfish Is this enough for my tank (am trying to go with a colour theme so no cardinals)
Joe
7 Pencilfish then if you're not having Cardinals

kuhli loach
making structure out of large driftwood and river rocks, for kuhlis to hide in. This may limit swimming room for pencilfish if they are very active but i don't think the apistos wil mind. Don't pencilfish grow to be 6cm long? if so a shoal of 7 would be a bit crowded confined in a tank my size I think Dad made me a great christmas present, its a real cool wooden auquarium lid with a light! :happy2:
Joe
Pencilfish are slender and slow-moving. 7 will be fine in your tank. What sort of light? Is it just one? I find that if it is a flourescent tube, you'll need two; one isn't nearly enough for your tank unless you plan to have very low-light plants. If I were you I'd go for two 24watt T5HO PowerGlos. kuhli loach
Its an incandescant 60 watt with a reflector
Joe
Wow! Your tank will do well with a 60watt bulb! That's a great amount of light. What is the kelvin rating on it?
kuhli loach
I don't know :dunno: I hope it would not be too hot for the fish
Joe
Have a look on the packaging. It will say e.g. 6,700K on it.
kuhli loach
it is not a specialzed auqarium light so does not say. I've got it positioned quite a good way up from the waterline so it will not get splashed (nor do these fish readily splash or jump as far as i know of) If it does give off quite a bit of heat should I keep water temperature a bit lower than recommended? (while cycling tank i'll get it to the right temp)
ryanjury
So you decided to go for a pair of cockatoos, good luck with that Why would you use a 60W incandescent, I would get a 6700k energy saving bulb it will save you a bit of electricity and heat and also be the right colour for growing plants and they are cheap. kuhli loach
 I didn't pick my lighting but thanks for the suggestions anyway In what order should I introduce my fish into my aquarium? 2 cockatoo dwarf cichlids 7 pencilfish 5 Kuhli loackes for the 60x30x30
SamH
 I didn't pick my lighting but thanks for the suggestions anyway Honestly dude, it's as easy as swapping the BULB out for a $5-$7 energy saver replacement. Go into Bunnings or Mitre10 Mega and either ask someone who knows what a Cool Daylight Energy Saver bulb is or head to their lighting section. All you'll get with an incandescent bulb is algae and a cruddy looking tank. HTH.
phoenix44
Crypts grow wonderfully under incandescent light.
SamH
Makes more sense to have a bulb in a spectrum that makes plants and fish look half decent and saves a bit of power too right?
kuhli loach
Crypts? Lighting change is not that easy, but never mind, more importantly which order shall I put my fish into my tank?
Joe
Just google Cryptocorynes. The fish should probably go in this order: Khulis Pencilfish Apistos Here's my C. cordata
kuhli loach
cool plants! do you know where I can get hold of cockatoo dwarf cichlids and pencils? pets unlimited in Palmy has both golden and banded Kuhlis in stock. Online picture of banded Kuhli on the Pets Unlimited website looks a little pale and washed out, does the colour brightness vary from loach to loach or do they come into a ritcher colour when in a comfortabl;e environment? antwan
Lighting change is not that easy Yes it is, he's not saying to completely replace the whole light system, just the bulb itself for an energy saver. Makes the tank look a whole lot nicer instead of having a yellow tinge that normal light bulbs give.
