DennisP
It is not straight val. I can tell you that now. Not sure if you can get it here. I remember a previous mention of this plant in a earlier thread though. HTH
blueyes
Thanks Dennis, I did a google NZ search and it came up with the threads from here and also it apparently can be bought from Petmart, but only instore they don't ship plants Oh well, might be back to the drawing board again lol
A-town...
you can get it here. needs intense lighting but looks amazing in water flow. readily available but not many shops supply it as people dont have the right lighting to grow it. Joe
I got some from Organism in Christchurch, but sadly it died. I'm not sure where you could get it in Auckland.
blueyes
Joe, maybe you coul ring HFF an see if they have it or if they could get it in for you. I don't really think it will be any good for a beginner like me.....plus I need low-medium light plants for the tank I'm planning, so I am thinking I will keep looking for some twisted val if thats suitable or I might go with some Cryptocoryne balansae..... Edit, scratch the twisted val, that needs strong lighting too Damn I really wanted something that will eventually grow and cover the surface of the water...... Joe
I live in Blenheim, so I can go to Christchurch and get more when I'm ready. Sometimes the petshop here has some.

alanmin4304
You would be wasting your money unless you had the whole shootencarboodle-----CO2, strong light and ferts. Cheaper to put the weeds from the garden on the compost heap.

Yep, pretty much why I've decided against it, I plan on doing all that, just the lighting won't be strong enough.....I plan on decent lighting but need to consider the fact that the clown loaches don't like too much light and the tank is pretty shallow so the kind of light that plant will need just isn't practical.....oh well, I think I'll just stick with the crypts
Ice222
What are your lights atm? I have twisted val in one of my tanks with a 24W PL light over it and it grows well. I actually think that the substrate is more important for the twisted Val. It was growing so fast at the start, 3 new Plantlets each week! I thought it would overrun my tank, but after the JBL ferts were used up, the growth has slowed to a crawl. I can't really add any more cause my substrate's too shallow now:(. blueyes
I haven't got the lights yet, was looking at one on trade-me which is a double T5HO 39w, or there was another single T8 that I was looking at, limited a little by funds at the moment. I have some Aquabasis for the the base, then builders sand as the gravel....it will be my first time having a planted tank so lots of planning going into it..... it will be an Asian biotope so trying to stick with both plants and fish from Asia..... the twisted val seems to be quite elusive at the moment though lol
Ice222
Really? I know HFF Mt Roskill has quite a bit for sale if you did want some. Mine are looking pretty dismal as most of them have melted when I treated the tank for velvet, I may end up just buying some more from HFF, so I don't have any that are decent enough to give out. blueyes
Really? I know HFF Mt Roskill has quite a bit for sale if you did want some. Cool, thanks for letting me know... I will head off to HFF once I am closer to being ready to plant, I might as well give it a go..... here's hoping my aquatic "green thumb" works better than my houseplant one lol I think I am probably one of the only people on this forum that has never been to HFF!!!!! While we are talking plants..... has anyone had any experience with Barclaya Longifolia??? It's another one on the list I have, but I think it may also be too demanding for a beginner?? phoenix44
Barcalya is not very commonly available. There is the green and red type. Both required lightly specialized conditions; mainly to do with light.
blueyes
Thanks P44, I might give it a miss for now as I'm not able to put as much $$ into the lighting as what is probably needed, at least my list is slowly getting narrowed down lol.... I have seen the barclaya on trade me recently...it's such a pretty plant.... would look awesome as a feature plant in an aquarium I'm eyeing this light up on TradeMe so here's hoping it's still there on payday lol http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pe ... 599414.htm
