DennisP
As per title. Does anybody know any good beaches around the place that have a good amount of interesting driftwood? I live out sumner way if that helps.

phoenix44
erm... why is it in your freezer?
SamH
erm... why is it in your freezer? I'd assume it's an attempt to rid the wood of unwanted organisms
phoenix44
I'd assume it's an attempt to rid the wood of unwanted organisms  Well it's not going to kill off any bacteria  They'll just go into a state of dormancy. SamH
Well it's not going to kill of any bacteria  They'll just go into a state of dormancy. Hence why I used the word "attempt". Putting the wood in the freezer was probably the result of false information or just common sense.
amethyst
I was told if you freeze it for 24 hours it will kill any bugs that crawled into it??
phoenix44
animals sure.. it should kill them. But animals are the least of your worry. Boiling is considered good practise, but it depends on the wood. Some you don't have to bother with. Boiling also helps remove some tannins that would otherwise leech into the tank. Definitely kills bacteria. Not archaebacteria, but you don't have to worry about them
amethyst
okey dokey, off to find a reeeealy big pot  . How long should I boil them for? The wood I got today looks the same as my store purchased one if that helps?
DennisP
Boiling at 100*C will destroy the bacteria almost instantly. Pretty much they start dying up around 70* but that will take longer. I usually biol the water, then let it sit in the put for about 10 seconds before I move on to other pieces. ryanjury
If you got it off the beach chances are it has been exposed to salt/salt water for long enough to kill any fresh water type bacteria that might affect your fish, just hose it off and use it
antwan
I just chuck mine straight in the tank, no problems yet. I go to Waikuku beach, got some real nice pieces there.

Adrienne
New Brighton had some really nice stuff when we were down there in early Feb and then we went to Lake Ellesmere where there is more driftwood than you can possibly ever ever want. Stella
Actually freezing will kill didymo. Not a bad idea in the South Island, even if not in a known didymo area. Freezing would be the best way to kill it in driftwood. 8) I really wouldn't want to deal with that in a tank... though it would be interesting to see the result! amethyst
EWWWW! It looks bad enough in the rivers I can't fathom it in a tank .
Stella
Actually, now I am really hoping that I get to see some on my trip down there in a month. I know about it but actually SEEING it would be a huge shock. I have the didymo bumper sticker on the back of my car to remind me to be really careful my gear if I am going to multiple waterways. Each time I go into the boot with waders/nets/lights etc I see it.
