Stella
I have been with InSPire.Net for 4 years, and the service is great but I am starting to wonder about the price, which is about to go up and I am a poor student. What I have: Inspire 256Kbit Bitstream 1GB total monthly traffic throttled to 64Kbit/s over cap $35.00/month. I have never reached the 1GB cap. No idea what my average usage is. Can probably be less, as I have never reached the cap, and now spend much of my online time at home. I can't remember the terminology, but the current setup is via the phonelines to the house, then wireless router to my laptop. Would really appreciate any suggestions. Thanks

Thanks Ouch, even xtra is better than that. How do you not use up 1gb? I think I hit that in a day and that's without any big downloads! Zayne
do you get telstra clear up there? its the fastest
Stella
That is the thing, I DON'T do big downloads. If I am not at uni I am online all day - email, here, facebook, etc etc. I download a bunch of scientific .pdfs but no music or movies  Oh, I remember I did do over 1GB once, on a youtube frenzy... Slingshot seems to be focussed on their bundle package, can I get the broadband alone at that price? Though it looks like my rental through Telecom is $50, so there is a small saving with the bundle, but not if I went with their $12 text option (I only text not call). The $2 nationwide calls looks good though!

Insect Direct
price wise slingshot seem ok. customer service can be a joke though, i got cut off for some unknown reason a few months back, they reckon it was a fault, took them 3 attempts to get it working again (over a week later). Then they tell me, sorry old plan no longer available...send me out a welcome package  . Ive only been a customer for a couple of years already. Now on same plan only more expensive  was not happy. Gave up trying to make sense of the overseas customer service, $%#$%# muppets. otherwise with out that drama, its been all good lol
Phantom
Anything but slingshot. I admin their community forums and unfortunately of recent times, the number of complaints has skyrocketed. I am also affected. I have both a fault and complaint lodged with them and the end result is they have told me I'll probably never get my speeds back and I'll have to switch to another provider. I can't really go into details as to why this is the case, but all I can really say is that you'll only be OK if you can connect to their "better network". This is available in most of Auckland and Hamilton.
BikBok
we're with telstra clear.. they have some good combos that you can mix and match to suit your needs and the speed is good too. They are promising to absorb the gst increase as well but that really only equates to a few dollars. (we have everything with them)
the-obstacle
not sure if anybody knows this but if you're with telecom on their total home package and you have a tivo you get uncapped internet - my usage meter says 0 the whole month. It's awesome.

It's awesome. I've heard you just need to get a tivo and telecom can't tell the difference between the Tivo's traffic and non-Tivo traffic so they make it unlimited. I'm skeptical though given that it looks like the Tivo should be getting all of it's information from a single service. So if they can't tell the difference I think they'll have it figured out before too long.
Matto
we are on vodafone, we get 30 gigs and free mysky and its cheaper than when we were on 20 gig with telstra

So if they can't tell the difference I think they'll have it figured out before too long. it's a bit more technical than that I believe. Something to do with the inability to do unmetered access to the sites that are supposed to be free so they just don't bill for anything on the line. You're right though, as soon as they figure it out they'll start charging for it again. It's been 10 months since they launched Tivo though... Phantom
They can do it, just they have to make a lot of changes. Just like with big time. It was easier for them to just cancel the plan.

Vinnie
thoughts on orcon?? If the service is anything like there tech staff I have to deal with, then I would say no... when I get a service order to install a data line for them and it won't work / can't be done I get some really strange / dumb questions which go completely against what I just told them :-? Just my opinion
Phantom
Orcon has a pretty good rep for decent speeds. I'm not with them personally but they are one of the ISPs I would seriously consider.
