ryanjury
Very nice but have you got any pics of the females? or one that looks like them? I have a feeling the ones I have found may not be A.hongsloi (just females no males) and I'm not sure what they are but the closet pic I can find that remsembles them are A.viejita. This is pretty much what the females look like but abit more (second pic on the bottom left)http://zipcodezoo.com/photographers/Nicholas%20Chung.asp They could be eunutus.. land_lubber
Possible but that website I posted with that pic was the closest I could find to the ones I saw. I could get them cause they are nice but I don't really want to fork out the money if I don't know what they are and if I can't get a male for them to breed
ryanjury
What are they being sold as? Female apistos can be very hard to id so it could be a big gamble and possible screw up if you were to breed them to the wrong male.. land_lubber
They are being sold as A.hongsloi I didn't think Apistos could interbreed, can they?
phoenix44
some can, some cant and wont. they won't normally hybridise if they can choose their own partners. Cool looking fish though.
ryanjury
There are distinct groups of apistos and they will interbreed within these groups.. Some of the females are so similar they are hard to tell apart. If they are being sold as honsloi by a descent shop (maybe even ask the fish guys what wholesaler etc they came from and if there were any other apistos in the same tank at any time) then I would grab them. I am sure it wont be long before males are available.
Jennifer
If you do indeed have female hongsloi, please hang onto them. I lost some of my females in the quake so it would be nice to pair them up with the males I have. The females are a little less than half the size of the males. They look like this (note the near lack of a 'chin' and the rounded tip to the dorsal fin): http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:-vTP ... uw.jpg&t=1 and http://www.aqua-fish.net/imgs/fish1/red ... hlid-2.jpg and http://www.aqua-art.biz/fish/foto/apist ... ngsloi.jpg Compare it to the image of the male: http://lh6.ggpht.com/_WIoCiAPTp10/Shz1u ... land_lubber
Yeah there are two in the same tank both females I think. I would get both but the tank I have set up for breeding is only 46x26x26 so might not be big enough for both of them and a male when/if I can find one. Jennifer
If there is an extra female out there, please let me know! Its a very small population of them here in NZ so i want to pair up as many as I can. Btw, I have males if you want one.
land_lubber
Ok so I went and brought them and took some pics for you guys too see but When I was having a closer look at them (as its hard in the shop) I'm pretty sure they are both males here are the pics sorry about the size of them I'm not sure how to resize them without making them small. Jennifer
They look like females to me. Of course its hard to be certain, and for that matter I can't be certain they are hongsloi, but the dark black markings on the dorsal fin and under the eye, as well as the less than prominent chin and the round body and dorsal fin, lead me to think female. The hongsloi have spots on the anal fin. I will try and post some pics of my males and females tonight.
phoenix44
Fins make them both look like females.
land_lubber
Haha I told you my iding is bad. The reason I thought they might be young males was because of the dorsal fin. Anyway would be good to find out what they are so I could breed them. If they are hongsloi I might have to take you up on the offer for a male
Jennifer
They have a similar shape to the hongsloi but none of mine have the orange pectoral fins, and the tail is bigger compared to the body so that might indicate that yours could be something other than hongsloi. Not sure though. Wish we had more to compare to.
phoenix44
L_L what store did you buy them from and when?
Adrienne
To be honest they look nothing like the hongsloi I had but then again it might just be the different lighting in the photo
Jennifer
I just took a pic of a breeding female hongsloi (she's about 2cm without the tail). She was all yellow but I think I made her mad. :-? Doesn't look much like the pics above....

Bilbo
Mike Wise will be able to tell you what it is but I think he will ask for a clearer photo. He had a go at me once for a poor picture. I am undecided because females usually don't have a blue coloured stripe above the lateral line and the lateral line tends to be thinner or in most cases it is separated into multiple black spots. Also females usually don't have blue on the face and the pelvic fins usually don't have much colour and those ones look red. But that fish doesnt have the finage I would expect from a male and as Jennifer already pointed out they do have spots on the anal fin and this picture shows some faint spots.
