A-town...
wow thats awesome. its a silver aro with lack of pigment. I would say its highly unlikly that they would ever come into NZ but then again you never know
Fruju
went for like 100,000 pounds I believe to a buyer in singapore, so yeah dreaming
Morcs
Jees. thats a lot of money... Imagine finding it on the floor one morning
alanmin4304
The person who bought it is no doubt imagining breeding it and selling the offspring (or their offspring).
henward
i would say the chances of a snow aro coming into the country is as likely as snakes being legalised.
alanmin4304
It is only a colour morph (possibly a leucistic) so no reason they could not be imported apart from the megabucks required.
henward
thats what i mean megabucks. nz has a limited market, say out of all fish keepers, a small % keeps mosnters. out of those monster fish keepers only a small % will ever spend several hundred let alone thousands of $ on a fish:D so.... likelihood is low but i would love one dream tank - aro comm.5 to 6 high grade aros and another 5 to 6 silver and black aros and maybe a jar or two:D tank must be 4000 litres i think. alanmin4304
Chances are that after a few generations they will be a similar cost to any other. Look at all the albinos and leucistics already around in other species. Just hope it happens before they put you in a box.
David R
Don't think its quite that simple Alan, its not like silver aros are difficult or uncommon to breed yet this colour morph very rarely appears. Same deal with platinum barramundi, they're bred in their millions for the aquaculture industry, yet platinums are still rare and very expensive. henward
yes, also numbers of certain fish are culled to keep the price up and the rarity. i was told this by a breeder in singapore of discus. he said discus once bred will keep breeding and potentially you can have thousands and thousands a year they cull them and keep the numbers down. no doubt same with arowanas
alanmin4304
Thanks for the info. Even normals are a bit much for me. The fish would probably be the cheapest part.
alanmin4304
Raising fish with that sort of agro would be the problem in numbers I think. Fighters will handle a small jar but not them I suspect.
David R
Even normals are a bit much for me. The fish would probably be the cheapest part. You're right, which is exactly why I would encourage people to spend a bit more to get the fish that they really want. The $200 price difference between a black and a silver is nothing when spread over 10+ years and taking the cost of the tank/food/power etc into consideration. Aggression isn't as much of a problem with the large outdoor ponds they use for breeding them, AFAIK.
henward
even in big tanks, jus tlike cichlids. when you have many fish, agro goes away apparently.

David R
You think the aro is cool, how about a platinum arapaima! http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forum ... p?t=334308 Imagine that thing when it gets to 6' long!!!
henward
..... i want one
David R
Yeah I'm surprised more effort hasn't gone into breeding platinum/high shine silver asian aro. maybe it has and just hasn't been successful, not sure? Would look awesome though...
henward
maybe not enough money in it as asian aro species i know that the albino and platinum asian formosus aros have recently just been bred - because they are a weaker gene i think like the colour traits in fish generally is when its white or albino.
