kiwiplymouth
Nice. It would be interesting to see if they survive in a tropical environment.
Joe
Can I please be the first one to test them? :bounce: I wouldn't be worried about ID yet. Just growing them in a tropical environment would be cool.

Insect Direct
top looks like a type of oxygen weed? bottom almost looks like a moss founds around damp forest floors http://www.nrc.govt.nz/Environment/Weed ... club-moss/
Joe
it is not willow moss joe... Yeah, it's not willow. Pics? I found it in the local river. I also saw some that was better developed, because it was higher up on the side of the river on a stone, therefor recieved more light. I took it (but there was only a bit), but it got cyanobacter on it and got choked. It was definately willow moss. Do you expect to see java or xmas moss in your local stream? NO. The other stuff I took was right down on the bottom of river bed, and hadn't grown as well because it recieved less light. Willow moss has high lighting needs if it is to grow properly. Insect Direct
Do you expect to see java or xmas moss in your local stream? NO. id say yes you are likely to find it. why not? doesnt look like what you have to me anyway

JOe, you can look at it a million times if you like and call it willow moss, but it is NOT willow moss. Java and Xmas moss can and will grow in cold water. I have been doing a trial all year long and it is flourishing outdoors. The moss you found is not willow moss. Period.
Insect Direct
i just googled willow moss...it does look similar but has that ever been here? and need more pics top pic looks like an exotic weed. bottom native ground cover, semi aquatic maybe. Joe
I compred it to my other moss, and it didn't look like java or xmas. It was much coarser. I've only got a wee bit left, which is covered in xmas moss so it's getting barely any light and isn't growing properly.

The above statement in no way rules out Java Moss and certainly does not suggest Willow Moss at all. Go get some more and post pics up here if you're so sure, otherwise stop claiming you have something you most likely do not.
Joe
Let's put an end to this pointless conversation. I hate to think where it will end up. We are also sabotaging A-town's thread. Let's just stick to the topic, which is to try and ID the mosses in the photos.
Joshlikesfish
http://www.fnzas.org.nz/index.php?PG=pestplants&PID=NM2 i think its that one. Have from the start
A-town...
came across this site.the bottom pic looks very similar to the stuff i found a few months ago would it possibly be in nz streams? http://www.aquamoss.net/Willow-Moss/Willow-Moss.htm
si_sphinx
It could be possible, the mosses will surely grow different depending on their environment conditions. high light in a tank, low compact growth. Low light, taller growth, also with more water current like a stream, the mosses could grow longer like the ones you found earlier. They do look very similar IMO
Stella
New Zealand has a lot of native aquatic bryophytes (liverworts and mosses). Often found in deep water of lakes, but some are also found in the shallows. If no one here knows what they are, I might be able to point you someone at NIWA who might know. Really pretty photos! Sophia
A-Town, I think the moss in your second picture looks like the stuff I found in Meola Creek viewtopic.php?f=41&t=49850&start=30 possibly illegal but plenty more there - this was attached to rocks, was yours?
