Insect Direct
ive hatched one in the past, for memory the best way i can describe them is they looked like midgy or queen ants, and a good number of them....
Zev
Looks like the evil White Cabbage Butterfly pupa to me - Pieris rapae, but maybe not green enough.
Insect Direct
Thanks Zev your onto it. Just looked at wikipedia and looks like your right. My memory must be playing tricks as im sure the last one i had hatched out little black things...maybe im thinking of something else. Will soon know when this one hatches
Zev
Maybe they were parasites and ate the original inhabitant?
Ira
Seems the only possible way. Because otherwise there's no way you'd get more than 1 per cocoon.
Insect Direct
True, interesting. This one looks the same as last time. Darkening all the time..should hatch in next week or two i think.
alanmin4304
It may be not green enough because the green bits were lunch and you are about to be invaded by pupae eating wasps.

Caryl
There is abig advert in our Saturday paper with a picture similar to yours and a request that anyone finding a pupae, or caterpillar, of these butterflies should report it to biosecurity immediately on 0800 80 99

Insect Direct
the one ive got is very likely from the green caterpillars in the garden which are from the normal white cabbage butterfly. only ever seen green caterpillars here, and i dont miss many nor do the frogs
Zev
My dageti Killifish are rather partial to them as well - Miss Eight decided to grow some broccoli this year, she would go out every few days and pick the damned things off when holes started appearing on the leaves, so we had quite a few. danval
I have seen what the parasitic wasp does to the looper caterpillar which infested my tomato plants last summer. Heres a pic. http://www.teara.govt.nz/files/p11144nsil.jpg Maybe the same parasitic wasp?
