Some people have no conscience

Today my car (hubby driving) was hit by another car at one of the big roundabouts onto the motorway up here in Aucks. Hubby saw the car coming down the road on his left as he came through the round-a-bout and headed towards the on-ramp. Two lanes of cars stopped but not this one, he just sped on through and clipped the back of our nearly new (4 months old) car. Did he stop - NO! Just floored it and continued on. My husband stopped, picked up the large pieces from the offending vehicle, stuck them in the boot of our car. Fortunately he is not hurt (or so he says although he looks mighty stiff to me). Damage to the car - the back bumper, the panel above the wheel, the rear door panel on the passengers side, the hubcap, the rim and the tyre. Rest of damage to the steering to be determined tomorrow by the panel beaters. Financial cost to us - excess, loss of our 60% no claim bonus which is considerable given we have 6 vehicles insured. Cost in real terms - at least my husband is alive. Hopefully the offending party has a very restless unsettled nights sleep tonight not knowing whether the accident was an injury one or not and develops enough of a conscience to report it to the police where we have also logged a report.

Gutted it really sucks when that happens, it is a shame he didn't get number plates or anything of the car.. As you say at least he was ok and at least you had insurance.

On the insurance front, surely you can let them know it wasn't your fault and also point out you guys do pay quite alot of insurance through them (assumption based on 6 vehicles you have insured).. Are you sure you don't have no claims for life as a few companies have gone to that now?

grrr how annoying.

A few weeks ago I came home to find a courier delivery van flipped onto its side across my lawn and driveway. The driver had only hurt his knee but it could have been a lot worse, he narrowly missed the street lamp.

What had happened is he was driving along when a speeding car on the wrong side of the road was heading straight for him, he had to swerve to miss, came up on the footpath and onto our lawn, turned to avoid the streetlamp and flipped the van. It was undrivable afterwards and needed to be towed away (after being pulled upright) Glass and plastic all over the place. The gouges in the grass and concrete still remain.

The speeding driver didn't even stop. Police weren't interested in coming out either.

Our neighborhood is currently in the process of getting a CCTV system in place if enough people sign up - we certainly don't mind putting our $20 in.

You are so right! I can't believe the nerve of some people! In the last two weeks one of my cars has been hit twice while parked and the offending drivers have left no note. The first time was in the Westfield mall carpark (and they refused to release - or even acknowledge they had, camera footage to see who did it). The second was in the New World car park and both of their cameras just missed the area where the car was parked. The no claims bonus will be lost and it will cost a $300 excess. I just can't believe somone didn't see it and leave a note or something. These were two very busy public places!

There is one good thing out of this, both of the hits occurred in nearly the same place so they can be claimed as one accident otherwise there would be two accidents and two excesses due!!

Lesson: park right in front of the security camera, no matter how far away it is (as long as it isn't a Westfield carpark in which case you are parking at your own risk).

And most people don't know that their no claims bonus wont be affected if the claim insurance to cover a third party if they do not need repairs done to their car

I have had my car bumped into so many times ive just stopped caring any more. Worst was a huge dent made in the left rear quarter panel made by someone backing into it. no note, nothing. and it was a bad dent too.

I must ask the insurance people again about that...I could have sworn they said I would have to pay the excess which is why they told me to get a quote for repair first in case it was less than the excess. I am sure it will be more than the excess anyway. :-?

Try to bargain and/or look elsewhere? I seems like bs to me that they take away your no claims bonus when you aren't in the wrong and are only making a claim because the other party did a runner.

Were there any witnesses? Get the number plate?

Some insurance companies (AA and AMI come to mind) advertise the fact that you have your no claims bonus for life (AA) or have some facility (freeBmax - AMI) to keep your bonus.

I'm with AMI for my insurance - from memory (don't have the policy in front of me) the freeBmax thing means even if I caused the accident I would keep my no claims bonus (as long as I didn't cause more than 1 accident a year(?)).

sounds right, I'm with AMI as well.

Go with AA they have no claims for life and agreed value (mine is more than the car is worth). They are also cheap and good to deal with.

Another bonus with their contence insurance is the old for new thing. They will replace you old stuff with new stuff if it is stolen of you drop your cell phone in the loo

That really sucks Adrieene! This world has some pretty terrible people! So many things that are out of our control that affect us in so many ways.

I'm a road cyclist, and my school team often trains on a small side street which essentially follows a square. This man was pulling into his driveway as we were coming around the corner at half the speed limit. My friend hit him head on, and the rest of us missed him. The man had no insurance and blamed us even though he was on the wrong side of the road. When the cops came they accused us of being "irresponsible teenagers on racing bikes that had to have been racing around the corner." "i used to do what you do as a kid an i know i was pretty stupid so you guys must be too" Cops said my friend had to pay for all damage, and the $3000 bike that was possibly totaled. Thankfully my coaches daughter was the head officer in the cops that came to us department and we didnt get in any trouble =D (which we shouldn't have anyway)

If its not going to affect somebody, they usually don't care. Humans suck :(

just a question... how else was the driver supposed to get into his driveway ?

It was a driveway on the turn which he didnt need to go onto the wrong side of the road for. He didn't even stop after the incident, just proceded into his driveway. Think of an L, his driveway was right on the corner and he was heading up the shorter bit

There were witnesses but they didn't stop - I mean where could they stop. It was on the roundabout at Greenlane where it intersects with the southbound onramp on the southern motorway. No rego number as it was the back end of the car that was hit. The car came from the leftmost of the three lanes

Will lose the no claims bonus because I suppose in theory we can't prove we were hit by another car although the panel beaters say the car was a 2005 corolla (from the front bumper that hubby did pick up). The cars been assessed however it hasn't yet been able to be seen by the wheel alignment specialists so there is a bit of doubt as to whether the damage may be structural given that the wheel took the direct hit. The cars only 4 months old too.
