TerminalAddict
Firstly. I went away for couple of months, and neglected my fish :-? Last weekend my arowana stop eating, and on closer inspection I noticed what looks like white fluff covering his/her body and even his/her eyes kind of a cross between a spider web type thing and cotton wool I did a large water change on the weekend, about 75% which has stopped the problem from getting any worse. I also dosed the tanl with melafix. Every other fish seems to be 100% happy, buty my arowana still has a little white fluff/cob web, and hasn't eaten for 5 days I'm also aware that arowana's are wierdo's, and sometimes just stop eating for the hell of it, but I am concerned. any help? TA.
petplanet
Get some furan. It will fix it. Do some water tests as well.
buzzy
could try turning up the temp that seems to help with most other sicknesses, just a thought.
TerminalAddict
well I think I may have discovered the problem My PH level is screwy. its yello (acidic ?? ) I've done 2 50% water changes in 3 days and the PH doesn't seem to be changing :-? .. time to go to the shop and buy artificial PH-a-fier's any suggestions? I've got 1000 litres BTW
chimera
continue with the water changes immediately. you need to keep doing these every day until its fixed. ph solutions will only temporarily fix, still need to remove the acidic water. Caryl
Have you checked the pH of the tap water?
TerminalAddict
yes I have its about 8.5 (dark blue)
Caryl
I would have thought then that with the water changes you are doing the pH should be dropping. What is in the tank that may be affecting it? This is where the talk about 'buffering' comes in which always lost me
TerminalAddict
the only thing I haven't cleaned is the filter (which will happen tonight) The filter is biological, and about 200 litres not sure what else to check
Ira
If the tap water is 8.5 that should have brought the PH up very quickly with 2 50% water changes. Odd.
TerminalAddict
75% water change, cleaned the filter media, dosed with salt. ph is now 7.5-7.7 ... I'll keep tewsting it for the next two days, and if it stays good I'll wait until next weekend until the next water change.
TerminalAddict
well its now sunday night and the PH level is back to acidic my arowana has started swimming very badly and fear hid death is pending not sure what to do now desperate
TerminalAddict
well in a desperate measure I dosed the tank with sodium bicarbonate. My Arowana settled down heaps. so I guess his death during the night was at least painless

henward
no good, i have had extensive experiences with arowans in phililppines, from reds, golds, mixes and silvers in philippines silvers arowanas are 1-5 dollars nz dollars...funny huh cos we pay 130 for it here MINIMUM!! anwyays, i have had 3 aroawns in the past, two grew to huge size, but tank too small and filter not enough, not im bout to set up another wtih a huge tank and a good filter, should be ok, i hope:) and mixing it with lung fish too to grow together what i find is that, when the arowana gets big, they tend to slow down in small tanks, but in big tanks i dont know, i asked breede3rs and experts over seas in overseas forums, and giving lots of current to begin with is apprently really really really good, cos they excercise, once tehy are 15cms and above, current is good, they get stronger, and arowans ph is very tolerant anyways, supposedly. so sorry bout the loss, there is a huge anger that is manifested when a big and old fish dies
