Thought I'd introduce myself

Been reading a few topics and have finally succummed and registered so I can put my 2c worth in.

I'm from Johnsonville Wellington, have a small 80l tank that currently has two goldfish and one plecostamous. We have had several different arrangements in it and these guys are the result of their own culling regime! All seem to be getting on rather well together at the mo. They join the other animals of this house that include 1 dog, 2 cats, 2 guinnea pigs, and 4 humans.

Thank you all you existing members for your insightful and at times amusing comments! I look forward to some good thoughtful discussions.

Thanks guys! So good to hear from you already. I feel very welcome.

Hey, just off topic - have any of you guys got an HRV or DVS or anything similar? I had a guy around today to quote me for one and obviously he was doing the big sell and it all sounds very good etc etc., but what I want to know is - has anyone who has actually spent $3,600 on one thought that they had spent that wisely and it was all worth it?

Also, the most important thing is how it works in with gas central heating??? We have gas central heating in a house that is 270sqm and on 3 levels. The heating was put in when the house was built. I absolutely love it. Wouldn't have any other form of heating as I have researched a lot of them, but always come back to the gas central as it is the cheapest, fastest, cleanest and most efficient all over house heating I can find.

I am only worried that if I put in an HRV it might fight with it and put drafts around the place. Or failing that, simply just be ineffectual and I'll be wondering what I spent so much money on. Any comments appreciated.... :-?

We had a DVS in our last house and we found it great for keeping the moisture off the windows.

We found the heating component very expensive to run and opted not to use it.

I just got a quote for a heat transfer system that runs on a thermostat (much like a DVS) and the plan is to pump the free warm air from my attic into the bedrooms and to the fishroom in the garage.

The quote was $1400 ish

We have had a system installed a month ago. It is the Cleanaire system from Negawatt. My husband did a lot of very tedious research and decided that this was the best one. It doesn't use air from your roof cavity, but rather fresh air from outside. It takes in fresh air into a heat exchange box in you ceiling cavity, and takes exhaust heated air from the living room and bathroom, exchanges the heat in the heat exchanger, and then pumps the slightly warmed fresh air into the bedrooms and living room. It is designed for a house up to 300sqm. We have a flued gas fireplace in our living room and electric radiators under the windows in the bedrooms. From the moment we had the system installed we no longer have any condensation on our windows or walls (we had it bad too - in the mornings we would have a pool of water on some window sills so big it would start dripping onto the carpet), the house smells fresher, and the humidity is much lower (our baby monitor displays humidity), and we have our heaters on a lower temperature now. One of the reasons we wanted a fresh air system, apart from the fact that many of the companies who sell this sort of system are moving towards fresh air systems (DVS have one too now but it was too large for our ceiling cavity, and I think Moisture Master might have one too), is that there is a lot of literature about the crud that you have up in your ceiling - fibres from pink batts, mouse urine, dead spiders, etc etc and that the filters don't necessarily filter everything. Systems that take air from your roof space are also illegal in many countries because of fire regulations. And don't be fooled by the initials 'HRV'. Just because the company is called HRV, which I suppose is meant to be 'Heat Recovery Ventilation' they don't sell a heat recovery system.

Wow! Thank you so much Tiny. That is really good information. I'll go and do some more research myself on that. I have done a lot of research too, and after a while you just get confused because just as you were thinking one thing, someone comes along and shoots it all down!

Husband is currently telling me he can make this himself etc etc for around $500, blah blah. Getting to the point where I wished I never even thought of it!

However, any comments still welcome because would love to stop hubby from doing this himself! :P
