It used to be that there pelts were worth a bit tho. could never understand why anyone would want to wear a possum skin coat. as for the roll over and play dead never had one do that, they mostly growl and hiss at you. This is what we have here and their wool is really soft and warm
smidey
my wife makes slippers from possum skins for our kiddies, the fur is great for that sort of thing.
Caryl
Grant has a merino, possum fur mix jersey and it is very light but extremely warm. Makes him nice to cuddle up to as well (I am happy to cuddle up to him when he isn't weearing that jersey but he isn't as soft  )
diver21
would a vet desex a possum? i had a friend that had a pet possum, his job? he worked as a possum trapper, setting gin traps and clearing them. his reasoning for a pet possum was that he started to get incensitive to small furry things. phoenix44
I was told that vets (by vet students) were not allowed to treat possums at all.
aqua j
Possums aren't allowed to be kept as pets in NZ without a permit. Vets aren't supposed to treat a pet possum and return it to the owner, as this could make them liable for fines as well.
pufferfishnz
you do find the odd vet out there who will treat them. when i had my last possum, i knew a vet that was ok with treating her for me. but its all "keep it to yourself". twinkles
yep there's a few vets that will, same goes for ferrets. I think they all should, better to have people getting them desexed than too scared to take them to the vet and keeping quiet about them. People will own them either way. livingart
we have stopped taking in possums as people were seeing ours and thought they would have one too then when they got tired of them just letting them go
aqua j
Yeah you're right, you can usually find a vet who will help. I agree that where there is a will there's a way, if people want a pet possum they will have one, and it's better that they are desexed and kept healthy. (They can be so cute!) The main reason for them being banned is the risk of them having TB and infecting people, other possums and livestock. As long as people know this and take precautions. The number of kittens dumped to go feral etc will be doing far more harm than the few people with pet possums.
