DonnaM
Goodness, I think I've managed to post a photo in a thread!!!!! Anyway, I got this wee fella and his/her sibling last month from some people who stated their relative was a RES breeder...and this breeder is who the 2 babies came from. Is this kind of deformity common in RES? The other baby is missing toes as well, but I"m not sure if its a deformity or bitten off by a bigger turtle? Maybe I'll try to post a photo of it too!! I'm just interested if people have seen this before and what may have caused it?
DonnaM
Sorry photo not so clear, but you can see the alternate toes are missing.
livingart
could be bitten off, interesting that it is the same flipper on both of them have you seen the parents, if one of them is the same it will be genetic i haven't seen it before but then it can be hard to check out each hatchling from a large bunch
DonnaM
Hi livingart, no I didnt see the parents. In another city. The first baby has the main deformity on that flipper, but other 3 flippers also seem not 'quite right'. Toe nails very tiny/short and some in slightly different directions, but not fused like the one in photo. Its quite a little turtle and not much of an eater. I'll have to wait and see how it goes. Yes, I'm pretty sure the 2nd photo is of 'nibbled' toes too
Insect Direct
never seen that before, first looks like deformity second bitten first may have been bitten and regrown funny but hard to say really.
alanmin4304
Never seen that before in babies. Have had a male who got his fingernailsnails trimmed by a female with a headache. When they grow back they are a lot bigger and a different colour.
livingart
sometimes when in the egg parts of the developing foetus can stick to the inner membrane of egg and grow deformed
alanmin4304
Wouldn't be much of a breeder if they put the hatchlings in with much bigger ones. I have never had hatchlings the same size scrap.

DonnaM
Thanks Zev, Livingart...no more emails from me asking you to post a photo! :bounce: (Thanks heaps karznkats for coming over and showing me which buttons to push! ) I dont think the fused toes have grown back that way after a bite as shes too young to have had it 'heal' and just looks too 'genetic' really. :-? Doesnt seem to affect her too much. Tho she/hes pretty shy and spends plenty of time hiding under the plecostomos' tail
lmsmith
I'm still in shock that they're called flippers! Aren't they feet....?
livingart
didn't want to get too technical, a foot has toes whereas a flipper has the toes fused into a paddle and small claws easier to say flipper than webbed foot
