Mr McFish
Does anyone know why this would happen? Have tryed many different power points but it makes no difference. Only does it with chanel 1.
phoenix44
weird/ sorry I dont know much about why it would cause interference. but I'd try another power main, instead of another plug point in the same extension. if that's what you are doing then I dunno
A-town...
yea t5s are wierd. mine turns on all the time in summer but when winter hits it turns off after a couple minutes pull out leave for 2 mins plug back in and will go all day :-? lmsmith
Ah, I have that problem too. It's a major problem with sky. It happens because the light is on the same wavelength as the remote. It's ugly, but tape a toilet paper roll to the incoming sensor on your TV and it'll stop it. Energy saver light bulbs do it too,
oeminx
I think what mcfish is getting at is the tv reception is being interfered with by the the light? If so the interference is because T5 fluros use a high frequency ballast which will be close to the frequency of the TV one signal and it is the electrical noise from the bulb that is interfering with the tv signal. Is it a DIY setup?
Mr McFish
Yes its the tv reception thats being effected. I havn`t had any problems with the light switching off. And it`s not a DIY set up.
lmsmith
It must be acting as an aerial. Weird!
Mel
Yep happens to us to, only on channel one and only when the t5 lights are on :-?
Ira
Interesting...Ballast might be giving off heaps of radio noise. The frequencies of TV stations in NZ range from somewhere around 60 mhz to 700 mhz, so I'd be surprised if it's interfering with all of them? Try wrapping some aluminum foil around the ballast. oeminx
Try wrapping some aluminum foil around the ballast. Ballasts normally have a metal case around them that is earthed already.
GBoyd
how old is the bulb? Wipe the bulb with an antistatic cloth and see if that helps. Its probably due to the bulb aging tho and presenting a different impedance to the ballast.
Mel
Ours isn't that old only brought the tank setup in december - so don't think it's got to do with aged bulbs
oeminx
In short the bulb works buy having a high voltage across the tube, then electrons jump from one end to the other on there way to the other end of the tube they hit some mercury atoms, causing photons to be released. Then the direction of the electron flow changes and it start again. In a high frequency ballasts this is happening at 16-40 Khz. The result of having electrons moving up and down this tube is RF noise that may interfere with your TV signal.
Mr McFish
The bulbs have allways done this since I first got them in Jully.
Mr McFish
Think I might just tell everyone to watch 3 news instead of having to turn it off at 6.
oeminx
can you move the TV to another room?
Mr McFish
No it does it with 3 different tvs around the house.
suphew
It will be something wrong with the ballast or ignitor, you'll need to get it serviced or replaced to fix the problem. All electrical item's sold in NZ have to comply with electrical standards, part of this is not generating electrical interference, therefore if it's doing it, it must be broken. phoenix44
itll be under warranty, so get it replaced.

Going there tomorrow to buy some plants and will the purchase be on the computer? because I lost the reciept.
phoenix44
the bulbs are fine. so take them out, as the stock t5's do not come with tubes. if you have a "club card" and i presume you do  the purchase can be found. if not you need a receipt as proof of purchase.
