Hi all,

I'm new to the forums and just got back into the exciting world of tropical fish. I've taken a few years off from raising fish to raise some little humans instead. I've kept a pretty wide variety of fish before and bred a few before (dwarf gouramis, cockatoo cichlids, electric yellows, kribensis). I lived in Canada for about 4 years and adpoted a couple of unwanted larger fish over there - one was supposedly a blood red parrot, but looked like a red devil. He was a real character. He spat rocks on the glass to get attention, attacked the scrubbing brush, the vacuum hose and my hand. The other was a reasonably big puffer... who died in an unfortunate heater thermostat incident.

6 months or so ago I convinced my wife that our girls would find fish an exciting pet and dusted off an old 2x1x1 tank I had left at my parents place. Since then the two kribensis I got have been breeding like crazy and I managed to get a great deal on trademe on a 170L tank. Now I have more kribensis that I know what to do with, a couple of very small lionheads, 4 tiger barbs and two bristlenose between the two tanks.

The kids love it and I'm really enjoying the hobby again. I have to admit I'm a little bored of the kribensis and would love to try and breed something a little more challenging. Maybe firemouths? Lionheads? German blue rams? I'm trying to find a way to do this on a budget as 2 kids, one income and a horrible mortgage doesn't leave much money for hobbies! I'm sure there are plenty of people here who can associate! I'll take a couple of pics of my tanks and I'd love some advice from people here on what I should try and get hold of to breed in these tanks.

I'm looking forward to learning from the experienced people on here. Thanks for letting me be part of your community!

Ben

Wow, very pleasant introduction Ben.

Welcome to the forums.

I'm sure you'll love it here.

And by the sounds of it, you have your hands full.

Good luck, I'm sure you'll manage something.

I can't be much help what you should breed, I'm slightly new to fish keeping myself.

Again goodluck.

The bigger of my two tanks... I quoted the size wrong, its only around 140 L. It looks pretty full of kribs, even after I sold 20+ of my bigger krib babies! The two parents are hiding away again as they have more 1 week old fry. Sheesh.

Despite being considered very low light I think my plants are growing nicely.

My 54L tank with 4 tiger barbs, numerous krib babies, a bristlenose and a small lionhead. The plants grow like rampant weeds and I need to do some tidying up.

Much more exciting than any fish tank... my beautiful girls. Lucy (almost 15 months) and Zoe (3 years).

Lucy is by far the biggest fan of my tanks

MTS - Multiple Tank Syndrome

A disease with no known cure but can be controlled by purchasing more and more tanks to house those "must have" fishes

Haha! I guess I was kinda right about it being an autoimmune disease then! I blame my 2 kribensis fry factory fish for the second, bigger, tank (which I did get for a steal on trademe - $100!)

Hi & welcome!

Your 2 little girls are so darn cute :bow::bow:

Where in Canada did you live???

Breeding fish, not my cup of tea. Don't have the space and just not interested in the concept but hats off to those who do :bounce: :bounce:

What are the plants in each of the top corner of your first pic? They look like they are floating, are they??

Take care & have fun,

Caper

Hey there Caper... I didn't expect to come across any canadians on here! Thank you for the compliment on my girls, they are even mor adorable in person :)

I lived in Windsor, Ontario for almost 4 years. It's right on the border with Detroit michigan in Southwest Ontario. Not exactly the most picturesque part of your beautiful country, but I met a lot of awesome people there (including my wife!)

I'm not sure what those plants were, but man did they grow like CRAZY. I almost had to get an aquatic weed whacker. They aren't floating, they are rooted in the substrate on either side. Navarre saw a bit of it on Saturday that I put in for cover for my fish... maybe he could tell you what it is?

I've only been a member for like a week, but I already have to re-post a picture of my tank as I've changed to a 250L african cichlid tank (I can't really say malawi cos half the fish in there are lionheads)

)Well, I just happened to come across this site when I first started to keep fish, hmmm only 4 years now I think :o :-? The people here were just so kind and welcoming and helpful, etc. etc.:bow: No matter where you're from they make you feel like family!!!!!

I only spent a weekend in Windsor many years ago when we were visting Toronto and my sister was living in Windsor. I remember they took us (Mom & me) for a drive over to Detroit (came back via tunnel). I remember being scared as at that time it had the highest murder rate! Seeing the police walking with guns and the stick things (can't think of what they are called  ) , it almost seemed like a movie set :o

I love those plants. However I do not keep real plants, too chicken to try plus don't think I'm up to the challenge. If things go good, I'm hoping to set up my 55 gallon tank.

Caper
