Aaron-Betta
Hi all, my tank seems to me over-run by algae at the moment. I have been double dosing with flourish excel to try and combat the black beard algae, but also have a green algae taking over my xmas moss. Any ideas of how to exterminate it? I have tried algaefix and leaving the light off and wrapping the tank in towels to try and keep it dark for two days. Any help would be great

supasi
What is your water like? Nutrient wise. Im guessing something is missing or is in excess. Work out what and treat it. Do you dose any ferts other than Flourish Excel? Do some biggish water changes and black out the tank for three or four days, then do a water change once lights back on. I find this seems to help me get a control on hair/thread algae. Manual removal helps HTH
HaNs
Id go with heavy water changes and a black out once again
jim r
That looks like hair algae and if it is, it is usually due to too much light. It is awefull to get rid of. TLC is what the water company uses and although I have tried it my success was limited when you consider the cost. You can get rid of majority by sliding your hand over the plant as it clings to your hand as you do it, but it does return in my experience. Stella
Isn't two days a bit short for the blackout to work? I think three is the usual recommendation. Check how much light gets through your towels, thin light ones let a lot of light through. You could also remove the worst affected plant and treat it separately.
