Dave+Amy
but the thing is, the compartment the pot is in has a narrow opening due to the first set of dividers so not much can fit through and I can't pull up the divider 'cos the second compartment belongs to the male fighter and has what's left of his bubblenest. Bilbo
that could be a WAY easier option, how do you take the pot out without the eggs coming out of the water? Does it matter if the eggs were out of the water for a second? yes it does :-) I have tried that method many times and failed. Best method is to keep under water at all times. I still managed to only keep 20 of my last batch. Dont quite know why because I have never had problems with rams before but I have lost 100's of them over the last few months. Dave+Amy
Did you lose 100's of juvies or adults Bilbo?? I made the mistake of putting the pair back into the community tank to clean out their compartment properly and soon enough the male from the pair and another male were flashing and locking mouths in combat over the female from the pair. Don't understand why none of the males want the other female
oeminx
Clearly one of them is gay and hasn't had any in a while, so started making out with the male first shoot he had.
Dave+Amy
hahahaha maybe I should add a few more to ease the tension
Dave+Amy
followed TM's recommendations and have hatched the latest batch of Blue Rams in a bucket, they are at the two day old wriggler stage - all can semi-swim! Mum looks like she's conditioned up again so won't be long until she lays another batch. Very excited - they're in semi green water and I'll be adding green water in everyday to top it up. Can Ram fry take micros before they take bbs?
oeminx
i never used bbs on them as i didn't have them at that time but i used micro from hatching and they seemed to eat them
Dave+Amy
sweet as updated photo of the Ram fry: am feeding them micro's, they don't look big enough for decap brineshrimp eggs at the moment - or are their mouths bigger than it seems? TM
How are they going now. Got myself a pair yesterday.

Dave+Amy
Got the first batch growing well, over a month old now and soon going to be added into their own grow out tank, the second batch only around 20/30 survivors because I wasn't careful enough when removing the pot around a week old. The female's breeding tube's starting to stick out again and I'm out of tank space so I might just leave her next spawn with her. Have to admit I'm not having much luck with hatching BBS (it's so simple so it's frustrating that I'm not getting it!!!)
Guest
How big are the fry at the moment?
Dave+Amy
older fry about 7/8 mm but quite fat in depth and smaller batch about 3 mm

Do you know what temp and salinity the water is? I have mine at about 25 and salinity at 1.
Dave+Amy
  forgot to add salt.....the most obvious factor missing
Luke*
oh dear!!! yeah that is rather important. after a while you can tell by the colour if it is hatched, should look orange not brown like the shell colour. if they are still hanging in their egg it looks brown. Guest
I freeze all mine as then it's good for baby corys and BNs and stuff like that and you don't need to hatch them as often.

Dave+Amy
I wondered why all I was getting was fluffy peach sludge  anyway I've got enough decap from Johannes and Stu to last a life time so I'll just use that until I get the brineshrimps hatching lol
Adrienne
Saltwaters a lot easier - is the beach too far away?
Dave+Amy
it has never occurred to me to use saltwater  I work directly across the road from the beach so it would be easy enough, I am worried about bacteria levels in the harbour though...? Would that be harmful for fry?
ryanjury
lol that is classic I guess we all have those moments.. Any salt water nasties wont survive in freshwater which is why you give your fresh water fish a salt water bath and vice versa. Good work on breeding the rams! Dave+Amy
cool thanks for that Ryan I'm still not having success in raising fry though - only around 20 survivors at a time, I ran out of room for the last spawning so I left the eggs to the parents and the Dad took care of the eggs, only 8 wrigglers on the pot the other eggs didn't get enough water circulation I'm guessing. At what age should I remove the Dad?
