Billaney
I'd be the first to admit , my knowlage of aquatic plants is minamal at best be I have no idea what this shoot is from. Its coming up from an area thats full of crypts and twisted Val which is what i thought it was at first but its much thicker and stright untill the tight dark twist at the top. Its also the only shoot like it in the tank. any thoughts ?
purplecatfish
Just guessing, but I think it might be a flower spike from the val.
supasi
That Billaney, is what I am trying to acheive with my set up. It is a cryptocoryne Flower. :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: I am very jealeous  Usually they only flower when grown emersed. How long has the plant been in your tank?? do you know what crypts you have in your tank? Cheers Simon
Billaney
its only been in there 6 months or so , the tanks still less than a year old. I really have no idea what type of cyrpt it is

supasi
http://www.nationaalherbarium.nl/Crypto ... f/aff.html This is my guess Cryptocoryne Affinis One of the few to flower while submerged.
Billaney
This shot shows more of the leaves its coming up from which might help ID the type of crypt i normally don't get excited about the plants but this is really neat
supasi
Do the leaves look like this? This is Affinis. Crypt leaves can look different depending on light, temp etc. Flower is the best way to id. Again, well done
alanmin4304
It is hard to tell because they can vary so much but the leaves and flowers look like affinis. Most pics of flowers are emersed and so might be slightly different as well.

alanmin4304
Looking at that pick the leaves don't look like affinis---more like blassii. Are the leaves red underneath and wide with crinkles?
Billaney
Looking at that pick the leaves don't look like affinis---more like blassii. Are the leaves red underneath and wide with crinkles? I'd say pinkish underneth and they are a little crinkly but not what i'd call wide. alanmin4304
I think it is blassii--- the flowers are similar.
cesarz
Here's a photo of Crypt affinis submerged with flower from the Netherlands National Herbarium for comparison
alanmin4304
I was looking at the leaves which didn't look too much like affinis. Blassii has a similar flower but I don't thnk it flowers submersed so we will go back to affinis.
